Hey, I ran across a DOS 7.10 release that claimed to be "free" .. is this true? I didn't think MS-DOS was ever "free". I can give a mod or admin the link if they want to check it out. (I think I still have it somewhere.) Personally, I consider it "abandonware", but I'm curious to know if it's actually free or not.

For this purpose, wouldn't it be legal to acquire (Bittorrent?) a copy of the manufacturer's OEM disc, as long as the COA for the machine is legit? I've seen them out there on torrent sites. And, if the installation medium isn't relevant, it should work, and legally, no? EDIT: Uummm, I just remembered, if you do this (torrent), be sure your share ratio doesn't go above 1.000 (at least not by much), or you're "distributing", I'm sure. Now, don't stop seeding before you reach that amount, or you're "leeching" and hurting the torrent. If this is legal in the first place.

Hi guys, I installed SP3 build 5512 (final release) on a friend's Gateway computer with XP Home Edition Service Pack 2. After restarting, two command windows appeared (normal for SP3 installs that I've seen - on my computer and about 15 - 20 others, this works flawlessly.. except for once when I had to uninstall SP3 pre-release, and re-install 5512 b/c of low system resources). But one of the windows has around 15 "Access is denied" notices. I've tried resetting the registry and filesystem permissions as instructed here under "using SubInACL", except I used "c:\" instead of "%SystemDrive%", because %SystemDrive% is "C:", not "C:\", which causes SUBINACL to simply apply to the c:\program files\windows resource kits\tools directory. Ha. So, after resetting, I re-installed SP3 build 5512 (final build). Same thing happened. Here's the log c:\windows\svcpack.log : Can anyone tell me what to do to either patch what's currently there to the way it should be if SP3 installed correctly, or how to get Windows to accept an SP3 re-install? Or does SP3 have to be uninstalled? Help, plz?
