  1. Actually, the file is on the hdd. Check my post #4. That same file is created when the video is streamed in both VLC & WMP. (In any case, I have posted the link to the web page if anyone would like to take on this mystery)
  2. Ok. I tried the dat extractor, it's a no go. Renaming the file didn't do anything. I've used .ASF & .WMV (which is what it is). If so, the file would be encrypted, no? Doesn't a container need its parent program to decode? I'm just making a presumption on that, since the video will stream in both WMP & VLC. In any case, your help is appreciated. Thanks.
  3. So far I have been unsuccessful in my attempts. I've tried to capture the stream with VLC, but the results were unacceptable. If anyone is willing to try, the link to the web page is here. The file itself will stream (with the direct link to the video file) in both the stand-alone WMP11, and also VLC. The video codec is WMV9 and the audio codec is WMA9. In TIF, the cached file name is cdn_comics19700520et2[1].DAT (8772 KB) The problem again is that this file is only readable while it resides in the TIF location! Once you copy/paste the file to another directory, the copied file cannot be read - both WMP11 & VLC regard the file as corrupt. Hopefully one of you out there can help me figure out a workaround of some sort. Thanks again for reading.
  4. Hi. I copied/pasted a video file from my Temp Internet Files location so that I could keep a copy of it, but I'm having no luck getting any player to run the file. The details: The file is from a webpage that plays the video file in an embedded WMP. I assumed this shouldn't be any problem, as if it plays in the embedded WMP, it should play just fine in the full version. Nope. I also tried running the file in VLC, but again, it won't open. For the record, the file in the TIF location is complete and not corrupt. The file has a DAT extension. I've changed it to WMV and still it's a no go. Obviously I have no other ideas on how to get this file to run outside of the original webpage location. Can anyone help? Thanks for reading.
  5. Hi. My screensaver setting went from 10 minutes to 1 minute after I ran this update. Has anyone else had this occur after installing this update?
  6. Mission accomplished! That was obviously the one thing I overlooked. Thank you very much for your reply, -X-
  7. Hi. I hope this question isn't out of bounds. I have a removable disc (portable music player) with a directory that can only be seen on the pmp itself. In windows explorer, even with show hidden files and folders activated, the directory will not show up, and thus, I cannot delete it. As well, when I conduct a search of the drive, the directory does not show up. Explorer does recognize the directory is there, though, because if I try to create another directory with the same name a prompt will appear stating a directory of the same name already exists. The directory was placed on the pmp by the OS (XP). It was a fluke occurance. The directory has never been there before. The directory name is recycled. If anyone would be able to suggest some way to remove this directory it would be appreciated. I would much rather not have to re-install the firmware and reload all the data. Thank you kindly.
  8. Yes, it would be logical and it's rather simple.
  9. Hello. Using XP/IE7, I'm considering moving my Temporary Internet Files location to my other hdd. I'd like to do this to lessen my primary hdd's need to work (and wear), thus making my slave drive do all the writing/reading. Would this be considered a logical thing to do? One thing I've noticed is that the default location cannot be re-selected. I'm also concerned about there being a possibility of 'something' going wrong and rendering my IE unuseable. Would System Restore revert my location settings (within the backed up time period, of course) back to default? Any thoughts from you veterans out there on this matter? Many thanks for reading.
  10. Hi everyone. I'm looking for a decoder to playback DVD's in WMP11 (installed in XP). Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer. I'm not looking to install a codec pack, but if anyone could please point me to an individual codec that I could install that would be great. I've been using VLC for DVD playback, but I would prefer the much better sound quality from WMP11. Many thanks.

    Ping script

Hello. I'm wondering if someone could advise me of a script to do this; I'd like to simply be able to click on a script (on the desktop) that would run command prompt ping 222.222.222.22. If someone could assist me I'd be grateful. Thanks for reading.
  12. I'm aware of the fact that empty disc space doesn't imply the need to defrag, but regardless of whether there is fragmentation on the drive, if there is empty space, and you choose to defragment, the program should still compact the drive. What's happening is that the external hdd, when I select defragment, simply spins with the head moving the same in an endless loop, with no progress showing even after 15 minutes of my monitoring it. I'm going to try DefragNT and see if it will work. Thanks for the replies.
  13. Ok... Specifically, here is the problem: Opening defrag and selecting Analyze for the external hdd, I get this message: Analysis is complete for: WD USB 2 (J:) You do not need to defrag this volume. The problem is that I can see the volume is fragmented, and should be defragged. Also, I have deleted a few gb's of data from this hdd so no doubt there is fragmentation. Can anyone recommend anything further? Thanks.
  14. Hello. I am looking for any advice on what I can do in relation to defragging an external hdd. The external hdd is formatted in Fat32, and XP won't defrag it. There was no problem defragging under Win98. Any suggestions? Thanks.
  15. Many thanks for the replies
  16. Hello everyone. First off, I'm hoping this topic doesn't venture too far off what's allowable, but here goes. I'm in need of a program that converts vob files to avi. There seems to be a lot of software out there, and I have tried a couple so far; VirtualDub & Power Video Converter. I have 10 vob files (~160mb total) that I would like to merge and convert to what seems to be the popular codecs (Xvid or Divx - not sure if those are actually both the same). I'd like to be able to convert them to about 20-25% of their original size (so - about 40mb). When I used the above programs I listed, I ended up with a vob file that is ~16mb in size ending up to be a ~450mb avi file. That's what I got using both programs. Obviously I have no comprehension of how these programs work, and perhaps someone can recommend (freeware) to me that can accomplish my objective. Thanks for reading.
  17. Well that's just it, the optical drive is for some reason requesting the hdd to read/write.It's not an issue of accessing either one, it's strictly an issue of when the optical drive activity light goes on, the hdd activity light mimics it. As I posted above, my previous optical drive didn't initiate the hdd to do anything like this, ever, and it is rather strange.
  18. Ok, well that's news to me. With the previous optical drive I had installed none of this would occur, ever, and it seems completely unnecessary and will contribute to the wear of the hdd (I could only imagine). Thanks for the replies.
  19. The machine is an 8 year old Dell desktop. The activity of the hdd is activated by the optical drive as I've explained in my original post. The hdd activity light goes on simultaneously with the optical drive activity light, whether the optical drive is reading sporadically, or constantly, the hdd will mimic it.
  20. Hello. I've just installed an NEC ND-3500A drive (the only optical drive on my pc) which replaced an old LG cd/rw. This is the only change (hardware or software) that I've made since this 'problem' developed. What's very peculiar is that every time I open the drawer (or close it), forcing the drive to read, the hdd also starts reading (not writing, I would guess) simultaneously! So, the green drive light goes on on the optical drive, and for the very same length of time, the hdd reads too. This also occurs when I run any disc in the optical drive. For any length of time the optical drive is reading, the hdd is also reading! Is this somehow firmware related? If anyone has experienced this and knows of a resolution, I'd appreciate it. Thanks for reading.
  21. Every game I play is older than 6 years. I have a few that were released in 1998. All were designed under Win98. For me, they all run perfectly well on XP. On my system they may all work perfectly, on yours they may not. The only way to find out is install them. If you are changing from Win98 to XP get ready for a shock. The shock comes when you realise how bad Win98 is in comparison.
