  1. Just what it says on the tin I was wondering if it is possible to build a Windows XP install CD (from an original source CD) which does a very quick install and doesn't go through all the 30+ minutes a regular one does? I've been looking at nLite and HFSLIP and removing a bunch of things but it still takes a very long time. I'm sure it isn't my computer which is a 3Ghz P4 with 2Gb memory and not unreasonable hard drive. I remember someone telling me a long time ago they bragged how they could install XP in only a few minutes. Any truth to this tale? How?
  2. I am having trouble with this problem! I used HFSLIP to put together a SOURCESS folder, which was originally from a Windows XP Pro integrated SP2 CD. To that setup I added all the critical updates and 3 switchless/unattended files. I'm pretty sure I put them in the right folders. The 3 exe files I made were for dotNET 2.0 (using the switchless creation script I found here somewhere), plus DX9.0c redistributable (repacked using 7zip as per the tutorial also here) and repack of Media Player 10. I tested each exe before as well and they all installed fine unattended. Now I went and use the resulting SOURCESS with nLite (and used the contents of NEWBIN.TXT to keep the files in that list) so everything all works fine and I remove a couple of things, but keep most of the services and windows components just to see if I can get this working properly first. I filled in all of the fields correctly. So come time to test the ISO I load it up into MS Virtual Machine 4. The ISO and the VM files are on seperate hard drives (as is my host operating system) so there shouldn't be much slowdown and it all works fine. I see the 3 exes extracting and the HDD indicator in VM4 showed they installed. So then it gets past the "Registering software" bit (I think it was?) but is now stuck at 9 minutes remaining "Saving Settings" The progress bar is stuck near the start! The background/XP blurb and the little graphic are cycling as usual though. VM4 is not showing any activity in the HDD led. The network led is flashing though. Help! I am almost finished with my CD but this is stuck near the end part
  3. I followed one tutorial here which let me make a direct x9.0c unattended installer, simply by repacking the redist package and using dxsetup.exe /silent inside the package. Now this got me thinking. Can't I do exactly the same thing with winrar (or winzip) using self extracting archives and setting them to execute the relevent file when they unpack? What is the benefit of using 7zip? Sorry if this is a noob question I am very noob since I only started to look at slipstreaming yesterday!
  4. Hello, I found this in a search since I can't get to the RogueSpear forum yet and it seems to work well. I was wondering if you have something like this which would work for Direct X 9c? I am having trouble finding a switchless silent install for the recent November redist. Thanks! EDIT: nevermind I extracted the files from the redist.exe and then packed it up again following the 7zip tutorial that is around here somewhere, using dxsetup.exe /silent and that seemed to work. I will test it properly later with a virtual machine once I get my ISO ready
  5. Ok! I just have to wait for an account to be activated then I will try that switchless installer. It sounds like the easiest option. Thanks for all the help
  6. Thank you very much, sounds like everything needed answered! I can't seem to find RogueSpear's dotnet 2.0 on that forum (I tried a search) would you happen to know the exact thread or direct link? Thanks in advance!
  7. Hello! I'd like to know how to go about adding external programs such as winzip, winrar and others so they can be installed using unattended install but it is confusing! Do I just put them in along with the updates/fixes I downloaded from microsoft? I can get it to install the updates but not the setup program (for example for winrar) Also what is the procedure if an app has many files needed to install and is not just one .exe or .msi for example it has a setup.exe plus lots of data files? Do I need to package it all up into one file somehow? What about registration codes, activation etc. where and how do I add those for an unattended install? Thanks much!
  8. Hi! I am trying to get my first slipstreamed XP install going and so far everything seems straightforward. I've placed the SOURCE files and the necessary updates, plus direct x 9.0c and WMP10 (I didn't want 11!) so all those are in the right folders. But now I am in need of some help and advice, specifically with dotnet 2.0 and Windows Installer 3.1 - how can I slipstream those and where can I download silent/hands free install versions? dotnet 2 requires installer 3.1 to be installed first I believe? Or do I not have to worry about that? Also how would I go about adding things like Winzip and other applications unattended and during the slipstream? Last question: any tutorial on how to use HFSLIP with nLite? I'd like to use HFSLIP to put everything together and just use nLite to remove a few things and apply some tweaks. What would be the easiest way of doing this? Thank you very much for your time
