  1. Well I got my connection right when they were Freeserve, so this explains why.
  2. If I use the speedtouch 330 then I can use the broadband connection on any machine without having to change anything obviously as this is a USB Modem. Any computer connected to this has to be modified using drtcp. Also I've just upped the MTU on the Router to 1500. It didn't affect the computer that was modified using drtcp, so I suppose this does mean I'll have to change each computer I connect it to. Reading through the reviews on ebuyer I've not come accross one yet where somebody comments on this happening to them, I'm considering sending the router back and replacing it with another one.
  3. I know this may not be what you're asking for but I found Virtual PC to be really lousy with Linux Distro's, like mentioned above have you tried VMWare. Or even Virtualbox (Free Software).
  4. I have just purchased this ADSL Ethernet router: Extra Value 4 Port ADSL / ADSL2/2+ Modem Router - Ebuyer When I configured my Internet connection on here I found that I could not access some websites. For example: Microsoft.com MSN.com Windows Live Messenger, etc. I did some research into this and I figured that I could change the MTU settings on the router and then change them on the computer using drtcp. I change the router MTU settings from 1500 to 1492 and then I did this on drtcp. It works fine on this machine, however any other computers I connect to this router they will not display microsoft.com or anything like before. I don't want to be going around changing the MTU Settings every time I add another computer to this router, so is there a setting I could set on this router that it I can connect any machine to it and it will just work. My Internet connection is Orange Broadband, if you need any other information please let me know.
  5. Right I used MSI Update to install the latest driver/SATA Driver, I'm still getting the same problem with my hard drives. Is there no config file that I can change so that it will delay the shut down time slightly and successfully spin the hard drives down.
  6. The hard drives on this machine do not appear to be spinning down correctly. When the machine is being shut down a loud click can be heard from the Hard Drives when the power has been cut. On my other Windows machines the hard drives can clearly be heard spinning down properly. I have listened to the machine very carefully on shut down and I can confirm that the drives are indeed just switching off with the power and performing an emergency park rather than spinning the drive down properly. This can shorten the life of the Hard Drives. The configuration is as follows: 2x SATA Drives, 160GB, Maxtor & Western Digital (They both make the click when shutting down) VIA k8m800 Northbridge VIA vt8237r plus Southbridge I am using the Drivers which were supplied with the motherboard (I believe Hyperion Version 5.00), I would update to the latest version, but last time I did such a thing it rendered the graphics card almost useless. Is there any way I can delay the shut down time and allow XP to spin down my drives properly?
  7. Because I usually deal with Linux, the Windows registry is beyond me sometimes. There are some customisations I need to carry out on a machine, however how can I set this to only apply to a certain user(s). As to what I understand HKEY_CURRENT_USER only applies to the person logged on. Is there any way I can change registry settings that will only apply to certain user profiles on this machine, without having to log on and launch regedit on each account. The system is set up like this: Windows XP Home Edition Sp2 5 user profiles, 4 limited, 1 administrator, of course there's the hidden Admin account that WXP has. There are registry settings I'd like applied to the 4 limited accounts, however I don't want these to affect the Admin accounts.
  8. I'll give Avast a try, there's simply no point of upgrading to XP & getting more memory, SDRam seems to cost more than DDR nowadays due to the limited supply and to be honest I may as well start from scratch if I was going to do that, it would work out cheaper. The whole idea is that I have a range of refurbished machines that I sell from time to time. Usually I install Linux, one user requested they'd like Windows 98 instead of Linux and XP wouldn't be cost effective.
  9. I Sell refurbished machines, although I usually install Linux on these machines, but for this one case I need to Install Windows 98SE. I know that there are ways to make it secure but there are some things I need to review and consider. Here is how the Machine is set up: Pentium III 750MHz 256MB SD-RAM 8MB Onboard Graphics 40GB HDD Obviously the specifications of this system are more than enough for Windows 98. The things I need to consider are: Anti-Virus Software, Since Grisoft are ending AVG support for Windows 98 soon I will need a good alternative, I've been researching but I'm not sure which the best one is but I'd like some advice. Unless of course Grisoft will just continue update packages for the 7.x Series. Firewalls, these shouldn't really be a problem as the Router that will be used is a Hardware Firewall. Spyware/Adware, I'm thinking of just using Spybot S&D. The machine will use Office 2000, with the Office 2007 Compatibility pack (Obviously it will have to be modified to install on 98 using ORCA). The default Media Player will be WMP9 & Media Player Classic. Since this machine will be for a customer, there are precautions that must be taken, obviously I don't want to be looking at it in 3 months time because it's been trashed already.
  10. Something I overlooked was the Network Bridge setting. I deleted the current Network bridge on the second computer and then recreated it, now everything seems to be working fine. Thanks for the help anyway.
  11. I'm having some problems with the new network I've setup in my house. For some reason I cannot share the Internet Connection as I used to be able to. Here's a diagram of how my network is set up. As you can see from the Diagram above the Internet connection is coming from a USB Speedtouch 330 Modem. The connection is then shared wirelessly from the Main computer to the Netgear ME102 Access Point. After this there is a wireless connection to the secondary computer, the Secondary computer has a Wireless USB adaptor, this works fine and the Internet Connection shared from the main computer works on the Secondary computer. There is a third computer connected to the secondary computer which is wired using crossover cable, all I get from this is Limited or No Connectivity and the third computer will not detect an Internet Connection. The Main & Secondary computers are in a Workgroup, the third is not, but even if it is in the Workgroup the Message still displays, also to note the Third Computer used to work by using the secondary computers Internet Connection even without being part of the Workgroup, which is what I want it to do now. The old configuaration was an additional Network card in the Secondary computer and another ME102 Access Point Connected to the secondary computer. All computers have a Fresh Install of Windows XP Home Edition Sp2.
  12. Yes it certainly runs well, who needs a more up to date operating system when this one fills it's purpose.
  13. Windows XP On the Laptop & Main Desktop. Windows 95 on the Media Centre Machine. OpenSUSE on everything else.
  14. There's no point of upgrading the Operating System. Windows 95 runs all of the applications I need it to and at a fast speed, much faster than my OpenSUSE machines would have. If I was going to upgrade it then I would put OpenSUSE on it, but there's simply no point it does what I intended it to do: Play Music Play Videos Play DVD's Watch TV Browse The Internet This machine was built from spare parts that come from scrapped machines that customers no longer needed. Windows 95 was £5 from a local computer store.
  15. In addition to my OpenSUSE 10.3 boxes, I run one more machine using Windows 95. I've set this up as a media centre, it plays all of my audio from my server and I have recently bought a TV Card and installed it. The machine is really fast to use, even though I have updated it and changed a lot of the configuration. It's primary media player is VLC Media player so it supports the latest formats. The primary browser on this machine is Opera. I have recently installed AMSN Messenger, which I also have on My OpenSUSE boxes just to prove to people you don't need the latest versions of MSN Messenger/Windows Live Messenger to voice clips and some of the other features. The System spec is as follows: Windows 95B with USB Support Installed 1GHz Pentium III 512Mb RAM 16Mb Shared Graphics 40GB Hard Disk Drive Integrated AC97 Sound Card
  16. I don't have much experience with setting up Windows based networks. Basically the main computer is running Windows XP Professional with SP2, the other machines are running Windows XP Pro too. What I'd like to do is set up a domain based network which the main computer will be used as a server. The main computer has the User Accounts and the other two computers don't, they simply have one local account that I set up earlier, I'd like the set up to be roaming profile based so that when one logs in the other two computers all their settings will be transferred over. So basically what I'd like to do is set up a domain, and then get the other two XP Pro machines to connect to this domain and get the roaming profiles from the server. Please tell me if you need anymore information.
