  1. s***! I actually didn't search at all for this one, somehow I must have thought it was a new and totally unknown idea for the community. Sorry guys, and thanks for the heads up, BigR.
  2. While sticking to Windows XP, one of the Vista features that I like is the screensaver with colored bubbles bouncing all over the screen. Would it be possible to port this one to XP? Even better, to *cough* make an nlite add-on out of it?
  3. Thanks for your offer, radix. I had actually almost forgotten about this one until going through my old posts. So before uploading it I gave it a new try, and lo and behold, it seemed to work! Guess one has learned a thing or two by being in the game a couple of months. :-D The trick was (at least seemingly, haven't verified it on a new install yet) to use the /s /v/qn switches, as it was an old InstallShield variation. For the record, the scanner is a Mustek ScanExpress 1200CU, the filename is up_libv14.EXE and the info I found here.
  4. Hi there. To make this XP installation perfect I still need a few things in the start menu. 1. remove the email icon above the line at the near-top left in the start menu (the "permanent" part), as I don't use mail very often, and if so only web based. 2. Possibly add a couple of other progs there, like utorrent. How to achieve these things through registry tweaking? I've tried searching both on web (including the great registry tweak collecton thread) and in the registry, but can't seem to quite nail it. A solution would be appreciated.
  5. ooh, nLite update! An event! And as Rick says, excellent timing.
  6. Hi, KSCorp! Love your pack, it spices up the system with both delicious and useful icons and I've never encountered obscure errors after install, like some of the other packs. Just one question: Is there a version of the pack with ONLY the dll and icon upgrades? Especially as a nlite addon, as this will be the main use for it. If so, that would really be amazingly great. Cheers!
  7. You don't have to package anything with Installshield. It's much easier to do by adding a few strategically placed folders in your XP installing folder before you make the img file. This way your files will be automatically copied to their destinations without any scrpting or anything. See http://unattended.msfn.org/unattended.xp/view/web/18/ for explanation.
  8. Thank you for the insight. Your conclusion is not entirely true, though. I mentioned earlier about mmm manipulating the taskbar menu. I found the installation and tok a screenshot, as you can see in the attachment. Also, the reason why I couldn't get mmm to do this trick all over in later installations was obviously because this was mmm+ (the non-free version), which somehow had found it's way onto my system. I will investigate a bit further to try and find mmm+'s secret.
  9. Hi'all. When rightclicking the taskbar you get a menu looking like this: toolbars > -------------- Cascade Windows Tile Windows horizontally Tile Windows vertically ------------------------ Task manager ------------------------ Lock the taskbar Properties When doing preparations for an unattended install it occured to me that I've never ever used the three options in blue text, they're actually only littering the menu. What is the best way of getting rid of these three? Preferably through some register tweak, since that's a tad easier to incorporate in an installation. I thought of using Mmm since this has worked once earlier, but when installing Mmm in another of my test installations it doesn't affect that menu at all.
  10. Oh, nevermind. Seems like I managed it on my own. Yay! If there's any interest I could put one up for download, as well.
  11. FileTargets is a shell context menu extension that adds a sub-menu with all your favorite folder names to the context-menu of all files and folders in your system so you can copy/move selected files to pre-defined, often used folders with the click of a mouse. The FileTargets menu is similar to the standard SendTo menu but is much more advanced since it allows you to create subgroups, automatically add new folders, copy file path names and much more. One of the really indispensable shell extensions I know is this one from Moon Software. I find it especially useful to quickly put downloaded music albums into their correct folders (like indie, prog, synth, techno etc.). Ths is a free prog, only when installing it is required that you enter a password which is freely collectable from their home page. Anyone have any ideas on how to overcome this obstacle to make a silent installer or nlite add-on? Perhaps an auto-it script would be the simplest, only my auto-it skills sucks.
  12. The easiest way to import registry entries (other than those directly supported by nLite) into your windows installation is to NOT do it in nLite, but to add them to your $OEM$ folder after you have run nLite, but before you finalize and make an ISO. In the $OEM$ folder (situated just above I386 in the windows installation folder) you will find cmdlines.txt, which looks something like this when you open it: [Commands] "rundll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection nLite.inf,U" Below those you add this line: "REGEDT32.EXE /S tweaks.reg" ...where tweaks.reg is the name of your reg file. Then put tweaks.reg (or whatever name you want to use) in the $OEM$ folder. You can have several reg files also, just put a new line for each file. 13. Oh, triggerhappy doubleposter.
  14. Ok, this is my first add-on release ever, so be gentle. The honor belongs to one of my favorite text editors, Editpad Lite, recently upgraded to 6.3.1. I usually use Editpad for non-code text and notepad2 for code. Some features from the home page: You can open as many files in EditPad at a time as you want. You change between the open files by clicking on their tabs. No hassle with heaps of overlapping windows. Reopen menu that lists the last 16 files opened. EditPad puts an icon in the system tray that remains visible, even if EditPad is closed. This way you have easy and fast access to EditPad, without the need to keep it running all the time. If you do not like this, you can, of course, disable this feature and make EditPad behave like a normal Windows application. You will enjoy EditPad's unlimited undo and redo. You can even undo changes after saving them, as long as you did not close the file. EditPad reads and writes UNIX (LF only) and Mac (CR only) text files (in addition to DOS/Windows CR+LF files, of course). Since JG Soft uses their own installer software which as far as I could see don't have any silent swiches I had to do a bit reverse engineering. Luckily the actual files are few, the exe-file and a quite volumous help file being the notable ones. I removed all menu entries, as I think this is a type of program that doesn't need to clutter the menu. It is not set up as default editor from the start, as that is better left as your choice. When first started (through the right click "open with"-menu), Editpad will ask if it should be your primary text editor. Also, it is fully uninstallable (yep, mighty pleased with myself ), either from the add/remove programs list or through a shortcut in the program files/Editpad folder. I have tested it both as an ordinary install and as an add-on to a windows installation and it seems to work okay. If you find that it doesn't, do tell. Likewise, if you see something that could have been done better or just more elegantly, I'm keen to improve. 15. I've now checked this with the owner of the local mac (it belongs to a friend of mine, see). Running OSX 10.4.9, the administrative shares are NOT visible in that machine, neither my pc nor any of the other pc's on the lan. According to my friend the system has default settings as well.
  16. Thank you for your time, I appreciate it. You gave the answer i suspected. That's settled then, I'll just leave it be and direct my compulsive drive to remove anything that might not be needed to more important issues. Cheers!
  17. Thanks! Also for answering, also my half implied question. But alas, I forgot to mention that yes, we share an internet access as well, through a (firewalled) adsl router. So that's where the security issue will rise. Sorry about that. As for those things you mentioned which administrative shares will be used, you just confirmed my impression. PC administration is exclusively done on and from this pc, so the only network service (except internet access) needed will be simple file sharing of some music, images and the usual stuff.
  18. Hiyall, Just setting up my final nlited XP pro, and came across a choice of disabling administrative shares. After spending one hour++ searching, the definitive answer keeps eluding me, so I'll ask instead: My PC is on a private workgroup LAN with two other pcs (all three xp pro) and one mac. Will disabling administrative shares affect file sharing? Simple file sharing, that is. If the answer is no, shedding this feature would just make me feel better, as I see no reason to have them there (I conduct no fancypants networking). Guess you could say that I should ask this primarily for security, but then again, if so we wouldn't use simple file sharing? Anyway, be glad if anyone more knowledgeable could provide a simple yes or no here. (edit: added question mark smiley and corrected some language)
  19. Just want to add thumbs up. Great initiative!
  20. Anyone know any good switches for installing my 16-bit scanner drivers? It's for Mustek 1200cu. The /silent switch makes it, well, silent, but it still asks to reboot in the end. /?, /noreboot and /norestart doesn't work. Universal Switch Finder wouldn't give me any clues, either seems to be the case with google and this forum. Is there any "universal" switches that 16-bit programs can use which I have missed?
  21. I've been hunting for the supreme file manager for a couple of years now and have tried, well, several of them. A few are so good that they are kept as supplementary managers (e.g. ExplorerXP has great renaming options), but most lacked some feature or they just didn't feel right. So I ended up still using good old explorer. Then, only recently and incidentally, a file manager called Directory Opus came to my attention. To make a long story short, I haven't used windows explorer once since. It basically looks and feels like explorer, but adds all the little nice things like tabs, ftp, favorite folders and dual (or quadruple if you like) panes. And it is configurable and tweakable like nothing I've ever seen (except total commander perhaps, though it's a few generations since I used it, so that may have changed). Also important is that despite it's volumous set of features it feels really quick and responsive. Very few programs have become indispensable in my book, this is quickly becoming one. Try it!
  22. My suggestion for future releases of nlite is to be able to add screensavers, fonts and wallpapers as well as themes inside of the nlite application. This should be too hard to implement, as it is mostly a question of copying files to their correct location. E.g. *.scr ----> win\system32. Or is there activation and installation issues here that I haven't thought about? As a side question: when adding these things manually, will it be any problem to simply import them via the $OEM$ folder?
