  1. hi, Anyone know a way to do the equivalent or a work around of enabling/disabling scheduled tasks in vista (Through task scheduler you can press enable/disable when selecting a task) via cmd? Otherwise if no command to do it, how are tasks stored, could they be directly manipulated and still run when required? Alternatively anyone know a way to create a task via cmd that will wake the system to run? (AT.exe wont allow it to wake the system) Thanks
  2. Hi, i want to be able to start a connection and stop a vpn connection from cmd so i can use it in a batch file, however i can't find much on it and before i spend an hour looking through every inch of netsh and any other command that might work, i wandered if anyone knew how to do this? Before you suggest it making a shortcut to it and then calling that doesn't work. This is so a batch file can: Connect to VPN Map a network drive that requires VPN access Wait for request to close Disconnect network drive Dissconnect from VPN Thanks
  3. Ok thanks, Yes to view the drive when windows can't detect it i have to enable show hidden devices (also have the environment variable to show no connected devices set) Didin't really find HCL useful, and didn't see anything in cdrom.inf that stood out to be the problem. Yeah i have tried uninstalling and re-installing the device, although not when it's "not connected", however i want it to stop not being reconised.
  4. Can you suggest a vista compatible binary firmware reader/writer, the one I've used before with xp doesn't work with vista, so i can't work out what firmware version is currently on the drive, or flash the binary image I've found online. Thanks
  5. Hi, I've been having a problem with the DVD drive on my laptop (TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-L632D ATA Device). After a period of time after start up Vista can no longer detect the drive is there (Code 45) so it doesn't appear under device manager, disk management or my computer and it can't be accessed via a drive letter. Once the computer had rebooted it re-appears and functions correctly so this is a software/ driver issues. I'm trying to work out what it is as other people have reported similar problems with the same / other drives, and not just vista. One idea was that it was to do with the driver iTunes uses to burn cd's so i tried removing it (http://www.gearsoftware.com/wiki/index.php?title=DRIVERS:_Windows_-_Updating%2C_removing%2C_64_bit_versions%2C_etc#Vista.2C_Server_2003.2C_Windows_XP_and_Windows_2000) and that failed to fix the problem. The other software i use is Power ISO that has anything to do with the drive, apart from that non of my other software even touches it. I have the same problem on a full version of vista and the vlited version i use so its not to do with anything i've removed, and all drivers are upto date. Anyone else had a similar problem/any ideas for a solution?
  6. I use Avast as it is very easy to completely disable at start up yet still remain full functionality when needed without complaining or requiring a re-boot before it works, and then use the scanning engine on-demand if required. This doesn't reduce system performance yet enables scanning of files when required
  7. You could try loading them into the default profile, by installing firefox, then your extentions then copying that info to the setup files, i've never tried it using the setup but i don't see why it wouldn't work, worth a shot.
  8. Yeah either link vista to your xp documents or visa versa or even better have a seperate partition to store it all. Then right click on documents and properties and go to location, and point it to the new location
  9. Ok worked it out but its not that fun. Open up your desired control panel option, for this i'm using screen saver. Then run taskmanager, right click on Screen Saver Settings (or whatever its called), right click then go to process, For screen saver it came up as rundll32.exe Then goto view, Select Columbs... Then scroll down and select Command Line (only needed the first time you do this obviosly) Now go backto that rundll32.exe and go across to comandline value which is "C:\windows\system32\rundll32.exe"Shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL desk.cpl,ScreenSaver,@ScreenSaver for screen saver You then need to copy it out exactly, i had the run dialog box open and typed it into there, you can now make a shortcut to it, but first when you make the shortcut you have to remove the " by C:\ and after rundll32.exe and put a space inbetween rundll32.exe and shell32.dll So the linke for the screen saver is C:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exe Shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL desk.cpl,ScreenSaver,@ScreenSaver Hope this helps, i haven't tested it for any others but should work.
  10. Hi, all i know of is linking to the different items that come up under classic view by rightclicking and then going to shortcuts, i'll have a look though.
  11. I think with XP you can use Tweat UI to copy the current settings eg background, screen saver, under logon settings, you can get this tool from http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloa...ppowertoys.mspx So you would use an account set the desired wallpaper, then copy the settings over, then revert back. If you need to automate this process i dont really know off the top of my head Here is the direct download link http://download.microsoft.com/download/f/c...wertoySetup.exe If you need some more help then i will have a look into other options
  12. To hide a drive. Click on start highlight run and type in regedit then expand the tree to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer In the Explorer key folder, create a new DWORD value by right-clicking Explorer, then choosing New DWORD value. Name the value "NoDrives" (without the quotes). This value defines local and network drive visibility for each logical drive on the computer. All drives will be visible as long as this value's data is set to 0. Following the table provided below, enter the decimal number corresponding to the drive(s) you want to hide as NoDrives value data. When you right-click on NoDrives and choose Modify, be sure that you select Decimal base, not Hexadecimal. Drive Number to hide A: 1 B: 2 C: 4 D: 8 E: 16 F: 32 G: 64 H: 128 I: 256 J: 512 K: 1024 L: 2048 M: 4096 N: 8192 O: 16384 P: 32768 Q: 65536 R: 131072 S: 262144 T: 524288 U: 1048576 V: 2097152 W: 4194304 X: 8388608 Y: 16777216 Z: 33554432 All drives 67108863 If you want to hide more than one drive, you just simply add the drive amounts together for a combined total. For example, to hide the D:/ and T:/ drives, add the decimal value for the D:/ drive to the decimal value to the T:/ drive. 8 (D) + 524288 (T) = 524296 To disable all of your visible drives, set the value to 67108863. You must reboot your PC to see your changes. This is info i saved about a year ago, its posted in quite a few places so can't remember who to give credit to, but it works. You will have to logon as the users u want to restrict to do this for each of them. I haven't tested this under windows vista, so if it doesn't work i will have a look around and try myself, but dont't see why it shouldn't. I will test this later myself when i'm not busy. Hope this helps
  13. If you want to force anybody who is logged on/just the kids user acouts if logged on to be forcfully logged of, use task skedular to run either the program shutdown with switches /l /f, this will force a logoff. (for more info on shutdown command run comand promt and type shutdown) however i have fun sometimes it didn't work correctly when run directly from the task scheduler so i made a simple batch file with it in and got task schedular to run it. use notepad and write shutdown /l /f then save as logoff.bat or something similar (make sure its not been saved as logoff.bat.txt) have a play around with the task schedular, if you need more detailed instructions then say and i will help as for hiding drives, this can be done via the registry, i will have a look as i could do it for xp and post back later
  14. Hi, I'm trying to map a network drive from a windows xp machine running openssh as the ssh server, from a windows vista machine using putty. The ssh works fine (vnc also works over it without a problem). I'm forwarding port 139 etc... as sujested by all the guides for windows xp, and mapping the network path \\127.0.0.1\Sharedfoldername, however it never finds the network path. Does anyone know if there has been a change in vista that requires some other steps/modifications? Has anyone sucsessfuly done this? when i get hold of another windows xp based machine i will have a go to check it isn't somthing wrong with the server pc, but i'm assuming its just the way you have to configure vista. Thanks
  15. Sadly this seams to be a problem with all WD MyBooks, i have one and know others that have exactly the same probmlem under vista. If enough people complain WD might issue a vista specific driver to fix this problem, espicially considering its still a current product, however until then there is no known fix.
