  1. They probably used MSI v3.x to create the installer, to make sure Win9x won't ever be able to run it. Without the installer, nobody knows where exactly the files in the cab should go and which registry keys should be created/updated. This has to be deliberated, it's no accident/error/bug.

Bottom line is: Sun Java updates for Win9x - whether official or unofficial - are over.

I've checked the MSI file and it was built using 2.00 Schema - 9x compatible...

    I'll keep digging...

  2. I have tried the new Java installer, version 6u10.

Whereas before (versions 6u6 and 6u7) one could overcome the installer problems and use the .msi file to install Java, now it seems impossible.

Upon running jre-6u10-windows-i586-p.exe, a directory is created under R%\Application Data\Sun\Java\jre1.6.0_10, with two files:

    Data1.cab

    jre1.6.0_10.msi

The .cab file contains all or most of the actual files to be extracted and installed (under "core.zip"). However, the .msi file pops with Error 1721. Thus, it seems the only way to install would now be to manually extract files?

Would it be so hard for Sun to make the installation process Win98-friendly, seeing as Java 6u10 itself should still work on Windows 98?

When I try to install Java 6u10 (and fails), my msievent.log file (in Temp) is:

24/11/2008 19:15:20 (Error ) Product: Java 6 Update 10 -- Error 1723.There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A DLL required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor. Action unzipcore, entry: MSIunzipcore, library: C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\regutils.dll

    24/11/2008 19:15:28 (Info ) Product: Java 6 Update 10 -- Installation operation failed.

    Nice work MDGx! :D

As always, a superb package! - so far Windows Media Player works correctly.

    However, a word of warning:

The last three releases of 98MP10 replace SHFOLDER.DLL.

If you are using KernelEx 0.3.4, 0.3.5, or 0.3.6, you will lose the SHFOLDER.DLL patching.

After installing 98MP10, you must uninstall and reinstall KernelEx to re-patch SHFOLDER.DLL.

    1) Use Driver Cleaner v1.5 to uninstall a previous installation of the NVIDIA GeForce driver (Add/Remove doesn't work for this driver)

    ...

Yep!, nVidia broke the uninstaller, nvuDisp.exe (1.0.1.41), after 77.72...

    Use nvuDisp.exe 1.0.1.39 from 77.72.

If you've already installed the broken one, then just copy the good file to the Windows System folder.

You will then be able to uninstall 80 series drivers correctly.

Why do I get the impression that nVidia really bungled the 80 series 9x drivers and got themselves in such a mess that they just bailed...

    :)

I tried the 81.98 drivers with a 7600, but they just crashed.

I don't actually think I tried 77.72 since I figured if the 81.98 drivers did not work then nothing earlier would...

I'll have to give them a go (INF modded of course!)

Well I tried the 77.72 INF modded drivers with the 7600 GS... They would not initialise (on bootup)... Only 82.69 will initialise with 7600...

    Supports theoretically most PCI, AGP + PCIe/PCIx GeForce + Quadro 5xxx, 6xxx, 7xxx, 8xxx + 9xxx series and widescreen monitors resolutions + refresh rates.

Added GeForce 9xxx series INF support [thank you aqcww!].

    Have fun.

Great work folks! All we need now is confirmation that an 8 or 9 series card actually works on 9x!

Is nvuDisp.exe from official 77.72 driver included in the updated unofficial 82.69 driver?

No, MDGx has not included nvuDisp 1.0.1.39 from 77.72...

Any comments MDGx? - See my quoted post above.

I've never got the 80 series uninstaller (1.0.1.41) to work on my PC...

Has anyone ever successfully used the nVidia uninstaller from the 80 series drivers without crashing out?

  5. ...

Thanks, but it looks slightly complicated as I don't know which one of those links to use, as there are a few after the first link you gave here. and I would be afraid of removing stuff beforehand.

Just use the first link for version 3.3 English - unless you want Russian, then you can use the second link.

I'm using 3.3 and it works well.

The other links are previous releases for anyone who might be troubleshooting and so on.

Also, you can look at this post (#407) for download mirrors and additional languages: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showto...st&p=715699

AOL terminated their web hosting service so I had to move my website...

    ...

The standard FDISK can be used in Percentage mode up to 512GiB. I haven't tested the updated version since it is buggy...

rloew, sorry to hear about AOL retiring hometown - looks like AOL have made a lot of people unhappy...

I've been using the updated FDISK for years - care to expand on what's buggy in it?

  8. Well, so far no one has confirmed an 8000 series card working in 9x...

Since 8000 series cards come with lots of RAM onboard, this is a problem to start with.

I calculated that with 512 MiB of video RAM, the 9x memory settings would basically be zero meaning no address space left...

It probably also depends on the Mobo.

Possibly 320 MiB could be made to work with some strict limiting of 9x memory settings...

I'm not even sure how XP can manage it's System Arena with a video frame buffer of 768 MiB or higher...

9x uses a 1 GiB System Arena, where NT OSs by default split the System Arena over two 1 GiB address spaces.

XP with a 512 MiB video card would most certainly fail using the 3G switch that makes it's addressing work like 9x.

The drivers were a final beta leaked from nVidia. There was also a 82.16 beta released to OEMs for the last 9x officially supported cards.

Without the source code, that nVidia would never release, there is little chance of a binary update of these drivers.

As for XP drivers... No chance. XP uses an entirely different video driver architecture.

    * Install VIA Hyperion Pro 5.11A followed by 5.13A to get IDE driver and also latest other drivers/infs.

    ...

A good sign from VIA regarding Windows 9x is that they have now put the Windows 9x VIAStor IDE driver back into their latest Hyperion Pro 5.20A.

This now means that 5.20A contains all the VIA chipset drivers in one package again and there is no need to install 5.11A first.

    I'm a happy camper. :thumbup

    So...

ONGD - FREE - VIA Hyperion Pro (5.20A with 9x VIAStor IDE driver) --- http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageI...&CatID=1110

I would therefore think that it also contains all VIA 9x SATA drivers as well... (I don't have SATA so I cannot confirm)

I think its a stupid waste of energy and resources leaving it on......

    ...

Lets it rest and be ready for the next time you wanna use it :)

Actually, the worst wear and stress on a PC is the first few minutes when it turns on from cold...

Anytime someone has problems with old hardware starting up, they can leave the PC running rather than powering off and generally it will work fine for sometime before finally packing up...

Besides, my P3 idles at about 50W...

And... I don't have to wait for it to boot up everytime I need to use it!

You'll find most revisions of Sysinternals tools archived here.

An added bonus is the source code that is all but gone since M$ "took over management"...

You can see in the list of snapshot dates when files change by an asterisk next to the date.

Many revisions of the original home page can be viewed from:

    Happy searching! :)

  12. ...

Correct me, if I'm wrong, but "August 2008 DirectX redist" does not support Windows 98...

    Correct.

In fact Microsoft dropped support after December 2006 Redist according to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;DisplayLang=en

"Starting with Febraury 2007 SDK release - The redist no longer supports Win9x"

However, releases before June 2008 were just missing bda.cab and directx.cab from the December 2006 release.

Starting June 2008, Microsoft have changed the cab format and so most people cannot install June or August.

For some reason, I am able to install June 2008 (I haven't tried August 2008 yet...).

  13. GeForce 6000 series card, 82.69 drivers:

I can get 1440x900 widescreen. If I restart my computer everything boots up okay. But, if I just choose to shutdown my computer, then it hangs with a blinking cursor in the middle of the monitor screen. Has anyone experienced this? How come it will hangs on shutdown, but not on restart? Any known fix for this? Thanks.

Unfortunately, it is a known problem with nVidia 80 series 9x drivers...

Have a read through the 82.69 drivers topic: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=97140

I even get it sometimes during restart, but mostly with shutdowns.

I just leave my PC on, and turn off the monitor...

  14. ...

Also, I CAN get my Audigy 4 to work under Windows 98 SE using the KX Project drivers instead of the Creative ones, but then the sound in DOS games/programs will not work (because these drivers do not include DOS emulation). However, if you use your computer for primarily music (and I do a lot of audio work) the KX Project drivers are supposedly better than the Creative ones. I only use the Creative ones because there are a lot of old DOS/Win9x games that I like. In any case the FireWire port on the Audigy 4 Pro works using the standard driver that comes with Windows 98 SE.

What version kX Project drivers did you use in 98SE?

According to the change log, 98 support was dropped after version 5.00.3537 (2004)...

  15. ...

There doesn't seem to be a file called "directx.cab".

There isn't one called "bda.cab" either. There are files called "bdant.cab" and "bdaxp.cab" though.

    ...

Unable to iterate through C:\WIN-98\TEMP\dxdllreg_x86.cab. The file may be damaged.

    ...

directx.cab and bda.cab were last available in the December 2006 DirectX release (can download from MS).

The reason you cannot access dxdllreg_x86.cab (and possibly others too) is because it is in an updated Cab format.

This seems to be the core of the problem...

Try using the latest release of WinRAR, PowerArchiver or your choice of archiver to extract/view it.

I still have not determined why my 98SE can install the June 2008 DirectX...

I do have MDGx's 98SE2ME installed... This is probably the last option to test.

Is anyone using 98SE2ME able to install DirectX June 2008 without the file extraction error?

  16. 7600 GS AGP... This seems to be the problem card in 9x...

I've got a Gigabyte 7600 GS 256MB AGP passive cooled card. On my test PC, it runs properly in XP.

But... 98SE on the same PC with 82.69 drivers, has missing triangles in DirectX games. Also some triangles have one point that is away in the wrong place - really weird effect!

(I even tried 81.98 and 82.16 drivers with 82.69 INFs... - just crashes at video driver initialisation...)

It does not seem to be random since I can navigate around this 'distorted' world!

I've tested a number of games with the same result.

98SE is up to date with Auto-Patcher 98.

    Oddly, OpenGL games are okay!!!

I will try another clean install of 98SE to confirm.

Has anyone seen this problem with the 7600 GS AGP in 9x with 82.69 drivers?

    Problem solved!

    I was using a 350W PSU before...

    I've installed a 430W PSU with 18A on the 12V rail...

All seems to work now with the 7600 GS 256MB and 82.69 drivers.

Looks like this card is a power sucker!

  17. Hi soporific! :hello:

Glad you could drop in after floating around in the Ether!

    Let's get 9x rolling for 2008!

We need lots of testers for new updates (and free software add-ons), since some updated files this year have issues with some software or Windows 98SE itself.

The more input from people, the better the next AP updates set will be!

So, everyone get testing MDGx's currently listed updates and report!
