What's exactly the deal with those "repacked" drivers? Was it just an installer that refused to continue if 9x is detected even though the actual DLLs work fine? How could anyone know for sure 9x is fully compatible?

    ..

It's very simple. Microsoft have ceased support for Windows 9x series.

Therefore, updates are not packaged to install on 9x.

System updates have a very specific installer structure for a particular series of Windows (95. 98/Me, 2000, XP, Vista,...)

Components like Internet Explorer 6 SP1, and Windows Media Player 9 share the same files between 9x and 2000.

Each set of updated files that comes out for Windows 2000 are tested on 9x.

If the files do not all work, then the results are quickly posted and the update is not added or is removed from MDGx's update topic (above).

I think I've only found one IE6 update that had one file with a problem - fixed in next update - possibly an actual Microsoft bug...

Current IE6 updates work really well - faster than the last official 9x updates for IE6.

The advantage is that you get the latest security updates - this should never be under estimated!

  2. ..

I'm reluctant to use anything that's more than the bare minimum, particularly mixing different replacements DLLs/modified ones. Also I'm hesitant to use patched DLLs without knowing the details on what was changed.

    ...

I've been using the unofficial updates for at least a year now.

I have both 98SE and XP on my PC, and with all the updates (official and unofficial), I prefer 98SE!

The unofficial updates on MSFN come from a few proven reliable sources.

Many of us have the skills to determine what has been changed between the last official binaries and the unofficial patch updates. Nothing dodgy has a chance!

Most Windows 9x unofficial updates are in fact official Microsoft binaries unpatched from the likes of Windows Me, 2000, XP updates.

You do not need to back-date the browser dlls to IE5.

That is a bad security choice!

I can delete GBs of 1000s of files with 98SE Explorer and have no hangs or delays.

I would recommend using SHELL98 update as a bare minimum solution to the Explorer problem.

If you want some technical background to the Shell fix, and the history, see here:

  3. Sun Java 6 update 7 is available.

    Yet to test on 9x...

    UPDATE:

Okay, here's the deal with Sun Java 6 update 7...

When the installer is run, it gives the following error:

    Java Setup

Error 1723.There is a problem with this Windows

Installer package. A DLL required for this install to

complete could not be run. Contact your support

    personnel or package vendor.

This is terminal, and the installer closes.

    Here is the fix:

When you see this error, go to your temp folder and copy the 15MB MSI file with current date/time to another folder.

Go back to the error message and close out of the installer.

Now run the MSI you copied from temp - Installation proceeds as normal.

I haven't found any problems with Java 6 update 7 yet.

For those who don't want to use Java 6, Java 5 update 16 is also available.

  4. I thought MS Office used its own copy of RichEdit... I just performed a search and indeed found one at

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Office10\RICHED20.DLL

Its version is 5.40.11.2220 and is most likely the original one installed by Office XP.

    ...

That is correct! I orginally updated my version in Windows System from the Common Files 5.40.x version.

I did not actually check that Word was loading the System version when I was using 5.50.x.

All I know is that Word and Windows was guaranteed to hang after a short time every time I used it.

Copying the Common Files version 5.40.x back into System solved the problem.

Okay, this is all very strange.

    I installed RICHED20.DLL 5.50.99.2014 and ran Word.

It does not load the dll from Windows at all...

When I deleted the version in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Office10, Word tried to run a repair to replace it...

So, I have copied 5.50.99.2014 into Office's Common Files to test...

It makes no sense why the copy in Windows System would have any bearing on Word crashing since it does not even attempt to load it...

And yet, at the moment I rolled back the version to the 5.40.x Office XP version, Word stopped crashing...

Anyway, I'll post results from my latest test.

  5. ...

The problem is, that I have never got 4-speaker sound working in VLC...

I can use stereo, but 4-speaker just gives me a high pitched scratching noise.

    ...

Okay, it looks like 0.8.6h has fixed my problem...

To get VLC player 0.8.6h working in 9x, see here: http://www.msfn.org/board/latest-VLC-playe...510#entry778510

I can now select Win32 waveOut extension output and it actually works instead of scratching noise for 5.1 audio...

  6. Well, after a nice run with 0.8.6f, VideoLAN has killed wxWidgets again in 9x...

I just tried 0.8.6h, and it fails with the classic 0.8.6e error:

    wxWidgets Fatal Error

This program uses Unicode and requires Windows NT/2000/XP.

    Program aborted.

So, I tried the libwxwidgets_plugin.dll fix by copying the file from the working 0.8.6f...

Now it starts, but when I try to play a video, it fails:

VLC has caused an invalid page fault in module liblinear_resampler_plugin.dll at 017f:6a5018aa

Guess I'm going back to 0.8.6f...

BTW, 0.8.6f can still be downloaded from:

    http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/vlc/0.8.6f/win32/

    UPDATE

0.8.6h works fine (with the 0.8.6f widgets plugin) with most files.

It just so happened that I tested it on a recently downloaded file.

The file was an Apple QuickTime trailer with 5.1 audio.

I used to be able to play these 5.1 trailers but with audio problems.

    (See here: http://www.msfn.org/board/VLC-media-player...ve-t115798.html)

However, now it appears that they will not play for me at all...

I tried 0.8.6c, 0.8.6f, and 0.8.6h, all with the same page fault.

QuickTime Trailers with stereo work with no problem.

I tried all sorts to play without error... Removing new software, changing Windows settings, and so on.

Summary: 0.8.6h works with the wxWidgets file from 0.8.6f, however 5.1 audio playback in QuickTime 7 files may be problematic...

    UPDATE - Problem Solved!

I had deselected the High quality audio resampling option to improve playback of HD QuickTime videos...

It appears now that the 'low quality' resampling fails on 9x with 5.1 audio...

With this re-enabled, all is fine!

And... since I can play 5.1 audio, I have also discovered that VLC player 0.8.6h has actually fixed my 5.1 audio problems. :thumbup

    See here: http://www.msfn.org/board/VLC-media-player...529#entry778529

  7. Okay... DirectX uses ADVAPI32.DLL...

I have version 4.90.0.3000 from Windows Me.

This was installed by MDGx's 98SE2ME pack...

I believe this is why I can install the June 2008 update.

On a test PC with all Auto-Patcher 98 updates installed (except manual installs), it would not work.

The only difference was that I did not have 98SE2ME installed.

So, it must be ADVAPI32.DLL 4.90.0.3000 that is needed!

  8. ...

I'm running 9.0.47 due to problems reported of newer versions...

I have not had any problems with recent versions of Flash.

The two websites mentioned that have had problems with Flash 9.0.115.0 and 9.0.124.0 appear to have been offline for about two weeks so I cannot confirm.

I would rather have the security fixes in 9.0.124.0 than leave my PC open to remote access/control.

It does not matter how good your firewall or security is... With the Flash vulnerabilities, if you can access a website that's been tampered with, 'they' can get into your PC!

The problem is, that most webmasters may not even know that someone has modified their website.

Most hosters seem to be very slow to apply all security updates and other mitigations to secure their sites.

This has been evident in the past with Internet worms that have mass infected websites even though a security patch has been available for weeks!

  9. ...

After applying latest updates from 7-1-2008, Internet Explorer (especially Flash plugin) is running *much* faster. I cannot explain it. Would be interesting if anyone else reports same result.

    :thumbup

    Yeah, I noticed that too...

It's running faster than the previous unofficial (win2k) IE update 947864 that was already faster than before!

    I'm running Flash 9.0.124.0.

Bleeder, what version of Flash are you running?

  10. For those wanting a good free PDF creator/convertor:

    LAST - FREE - activePDF PrimoPDF 3.1 --- http://www.filehippo.com/download_primopdf/2557/

You can try the latest (4.0.2.5) from http://www.primopdf.com/.

It states that it works in 98... But I could not get 3.2, 4.0, 4.0.1, or 4.0.2.5 to work.

4.x versions install okay, but throw a .NET 2.0 exception when used. 3.2 installs but fails in use too.

In February this year, Lance Kayashima from activePDF made this comment in the PrimoPDF Forums:

The hard choice is whether to continue to add more capability to PrimoPDF (e.g., Unicode) or stay backward compatible. The choice was made to maintain the effort to keep PrimoPDF the best in class and so Win95/98SE support (Engineering effort to maintain backward compatibility and product testing) was dropped, with continuing support of XP and adding Vista support.

I guess that sums it up!

I'd like to know why they still say it supports Windows 98, and why even the latest version still has the 9x PostScript drivers and PrimoPDF 9x print monitor... (that question has already been asked in their forums - with no answer...)

  11. ...

So when I reinstall my OS, I run Dec2007FinalFull first and then June2008Upgrade, yes?

    ...

    Correct.

    ...

Also, what do you mean by "Do NOT install any updates until you have used Auto-Patcher"? Are you talking about the 98SE Windows Update at the Microsoft site?...

Here is what I wrote some posts back to answer your question:

    ...

Auto-Patcher 98 has everything on Windows Update and more including many newer updates.

Even though Windows Update for 9x is no longer updated, Microsoft are still updating components like IE6 SP1 and WMP 9.

    ...

    ...

So then what is the best order of installation should I use then? Does it look something like this? >>...

    Here is your list amended:

    0. 98SE CD install

    1. Hardware drivers

    2. Autopatch

    3. Windows Update - as explained above

    4. DirectX 9C - in Auto-Patcher

    5. IE 6 and SP's (or is this all on the AP?) - in Auto-Patcher, and SPs are not really needed with AP

    6. TweakUI for 98SE (v1.33 I think) - an optional install in AP, from memory

    7. MS Office (I will use MSO 2k) - update Office at http://office.microsoft.com/en-au/downloads/maincatalog.aspx

    8. Any other software

    ...

In a prior thread, someone also told me about Service Pack 3.2 beta by Gape. Do I really need this too?...

As above, no not really since Auto-Patcher will install all the individual updates anyway.

    ...

Finally, is there any other beta patches I should install after Autopatcher?...

You can look at MDGx's updates topic (just been updated):

    http://www.msfn.org/board/98-FE-98-SE-ME-u...hes-t46581.html

  12. Thanks soporific.

It's nice to know that the 9x supporters are still supporting 9x!

Half way through 2008 and 9x is still alive and k-i-c-k-i-n-g!

BTW, MDGx has just dumped a long list of new updates on his topic:

    http://www.msfn.org/board/98-FE-98-SE-ME-u...hes-t46581.html

I'll test them out and report!

UPDATE: I've been running three updates:

    941029 update VBVM60.EXE,

    950759 update DXM9X.EXE,

    950759 update IE950759.EXE.

    So far no problems!

Looks good with the mid-year security updates!

  13. I've been running Java 6 update 6 for three weeks... It appears to me to be unstable and causing Internet Explorer to crash...

I've rolled back to Java 6 update 5 that was totally stable.

    Will post results...

I did have the Early Access version of Java 6u6 installed... (jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe)

I have now reinstalled Java 6u6, but this time the standard release (jre-6u6-windows-i586-p-s.exe)

So far it's been stable. I'm not sure what, if any, the differences are between Early Access and standard release versions.

  14. ...

This is the choice (read error if you like) from the website's creators...

That might be the case, but it worked fine in IE6 last year...

So, it does indicate deliberate exclusion of IE6 for their website.

I expect this trend will continue, and especially when IE8 is released, many websites will be forced to comply with stricter scripting.

See here for more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Explorer_8

    Of course, Firefox works...

  15. Microsoft will be supporting security updates on Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1 until at least 13 July 2010 through Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 support.

See the MS Windows 2000 Pro Support Lifecycle page: http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?p1=3071.

If you don't believe me then see the Notes box on the IE6 Support Lifecycle page: http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?p1=2073

Any webpage that takes you to a MS IE7 download page or says that it "requires" Windows XP or IE7 or whatever is just plain bad scripting and needs correcting!

Don't shoot! - I know this topic is from last year...

I also know I said the above about IE6 support and so on...

But, I have actually found my first web site that will not work correctly on IE6...

Go to Legend Memory's website: http://www.legendmemory.com/

Go to Products menu, then select Downloads, or Certifications, or Technical Support.

You will get the following message and cannot proceed:

You are using a version of Internet Explorer which does not allow iframes within a javascript popup, you can use Mozilla, Firefox or IE 7 to view the content.

So, maybe IE6's days are over?

  17. RICHED9X...

I installed it around late April...

Since then I found Word XP (2002) would lockup Windows after a short time of running.

I had been using RICHED20.DLL 5.40.11.2220 that came with Office XP.

Recently I traced the lockups to a small timeframe.

I determined that RICHED9X was the only significant change I had made then...

So, I have rolled back RICHED20.DLL from 5.50.99.2014 to 5.40.11.2220...

    So far no lockups.

The reason I figured it was RICHED20.DLL, was that when Windows locked up, the text in Word next to the cursor would have some lines of pixels displaced horizontally.

When I say lockup, I mean full-on freeze with no mouse movement or anything - no Ctrl-Alt-Delete, just the power button...

So, it would appear that RICHED20.DLL 5.50.99.2014 is incompatible with Word XP (2002).

If anyone is using Office XP in Windows 98SE, make a copy of RICHED20.DLL from the Windows System folder, and test RICHED9X with Word XP.

The copy of RICHED20.DLL can always be copied back if it does not work.

  18. I installed it okay on my current 98SE.

However, I have recently installed a fresh 98SE on a test PC.

This installed December 2006 and August 2007, but June 2008 had the mentioned internal error.

In the DXError.log file the reason for failure is extracting the cab files.

I'm concluding that I have a newer cab extraction dll on my current PC.

I will have to isolate the file and determine where I got it from...

It looks like the June 2008 cab files use a newer format.

I noticed that between DirectX releases, the cab files were identical except additional and updated ones.

However, the June 2008 cab files are all different.
