  1. Hi galahs,

Excellent idea. I was just about to start a similar thread... Glad to see you've done it first!

I suggest that you edit/update the first post with all new additions so there will be a complete list at the beginning of the thread.

I've noticed that lists are overlapping because items are not in the first post!

Also it would be a good idea to create sections like Windows components, Games, Utilities, Applications, Incompatible (for new software titles that will not work) etc.

BTW, I had not thought of actually installing Sun Java 1.6.0_03... Seems to work without any problems!

The installer only says that it is best on the listed OSs but not that it will not work on older ones...

Some software to add to list (long list!):

  2. Hey MDGx,

There are regular problems being reported with the current OLEUP update not actually installing OLEDLG.DLL and leaving the old one missing...

See a number of previous posts.

Also see here for the latest one.

I think the author of this unofficial update needs to revisit it!

It's really quite useless as an update as it stands if it needs manual intervention to get back an OLEDLG.DLL file that was there before the update...

  3. Hi MDGx,

I've been using your 98SE2ME pack for six months now.

I've manually made changes according to your release notes for the last few updates.

A lot of Windows Me GUI and features were really good... except the kernel and System Restore (shh, not so loud!)...

That's why I like 98SE2ME since it takes the cool stuff out of Me and then uses the better 98SE kernel!

Originally 98SE2ME installed without a hitch and has run ever since.

I also use Tihiy's Revolutions Pack 7 to further enhance the GUI and features.

I've been applying soporific's Auto-Patcher 98 as it comes out.

I only ever had problems with Auto-Patcher with Revolutions Pack (now solved - thanks MDGx!).

A big thank you MDGx :hello:

    Keep up the good work!

    Viv' la Windows 9x!

  4. I think an easy fix option is a great idea.

Exactly how this would be assembled is something to discuss.

    Perhaps a separate thread?

However, I think there may be some issue that is some times appearing with the update installers.

I had a problem some weeks ago with the OLEUP update where it did not replace the files on reboot and left them missing.

See my post here. Also this post.

Maybe a recent update has caused problems with IExpress installers in some cases?

    Something to look into.

    MDGx: Any comments?

  5. K891711 (or Q891711) IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS: DO NOT USE IT

For the second time (same problem as with the previous version 2 months ago) my computer was unable to restart and I had to reinstall windows.

It said "unable to load user.exe" then shut down in 1/10th of a second. Clack! (You know, the sound when the PC power is turned off). I didn't have the possibility to restart it! ===> Boot Floppy time!

    Fredledingue,

    See this post.

  6. May I suggest a new section: Update(er)s to avoid at any cost.

    DANGEROUS UPDATES

Not because of the updated files themselves but basicaly because the installer is not working...

    ...

    Especialy Q891711...

    Fredledingue,

The Q891711 problem was resolved in a 26 Sep update.

    See this post.

It was only an issue if Revolutions Pack was installed.

Before this update was fixed, I resolved my crashed Windows by booting to a command prompt and replacing user.exe and user32.dll with the Revolutions Pack versions.

  7. soporific,

You should probably clarify the actual version numbers of incompatible update files.

Since 921503 for example does have a compatible file hidden away in the mix as pointed out in the last posts.

So the actual dud files are:

    921503 (MS07-043) OLEAUT32.DLL is 2.40.4531.0

    936021 (MS07-042 936227) MSXML3.DLL is 8.90.1101.0

    936181 (MS07-042 936227) MSXML4.DLL is 4.20.9848.0

Essentially, versions of these three files that are numerically less than those listed, should be okay in 9x.

Hopefully we do not need to use the incompatible section too much...

As time rolls on and MS try to quietly exclude 9x (9x? I hear MS saying), this section might expand...

    :w00t:Viv' la Windows 9x! :hello:

  8. ...

    I'm using version 4.10.2222, extracted from driver14.cab...

    herbalist,

My previous pppmac.vxd file, although it was 4.10.2222, was from Dial-Up Networking 1.4 from MS.

This version and the one from the cabs have the same version number and almost the same size.

DUN14 version is dated five months newer.

I've had this version for some years...

So... My problem does not appear to be pppmac.vxd then...

I've had very little broken software with the unofficial packs installed.

(One problem is Adobe Reader ActiveX crashing when loading a pdf in IE - had to turn off imbedded pdf...)

I really cannot recall if I had any of the packs installed when Virtual PC networking broke...

Oh well, I'll just have to build another box and test installing each pack until it breaks...

  9. ...Version 4.10.2223 of PPPMAC.VXD appears to the break shared networking on Virtual PC 5.1. When I replaced PPPMAC.VXD with an original copy , it fixed the problem and shared networking works normally.

    ...

    Hi herbalist,

What version was your original working PPPMAC.VXD?

I too use Virtual PC 5.1 with Windows 98SE Host OS.

I last had shared networking working around the middle of last year.

Sometime since then it's been broken although I really cannot remember exactly when...

May this year I was using version 4.10.0.2222 which did not work either...

It was then I installed MDGx's 98SE2ME package.

I'm now using PPPMAC.VXD from Windows Me (installed by 98SE2ME) version 4.90.0.3000 and it still does not work with Virtual PC 5.1.

I'm keen to find out what version you are using that works.

  10. ...

However, after the OLE update installed and rebooted, I got a system message saying that C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\OLEDLG.DLL was missing...

    ...

All I need now is version checking of user32.dll and user.exe (like you do for other updates) for update Q891711.

Then I could select everything to install without worry about Revolutions...

    Oh well, maybe one day...

    Hi soporific,

A reminder of the OLE update failure (several complaints previously), and the Q891711 version checking of two dlls to prevent back-dating.

EDIT: Okay, looks like MDGx has fixed the Q891711 issue...

  11. ...

The incompatible section -- I think that's a good idea, and it looks like we need to wait a bit for some testing to occur on the new releases before we release into the wild. All the Win98se projects should take this approach me thinks.

    soporific,

I have tested the other two new updates I mentioned with the XML 4.0 SP2 update 936181.

    So...

921503 (MS07-043) OLEAUT32.DLL does not work. It causes HTML script errors with library not found messages...

936021 (MS07-042 936227) MSXML3.DLL does not work. It causes application errors...

    And as mentioned earlier,

936181 (MS07-042 936227) MSXML4.DLL does not work. XML 4 simply does not do anything... Broken...

I welcome others to test these updates.

  12. About shutdown problem - I'm 100% sure that it's caused by nvidia drivers because when I switch to standard PCI VGA then I can shutdown properly and even reboot to dos and return back to win. Once I switch to nV drivers it hangs again.

I agree but I think that using the Standard PCI VGA driver is not really proving anything.

This driver uses legacy VGA I/O and will not activate or utilise any AGP/PCI-E acceleration, system memory access, or any advanced chipset features.

I think the issue could be PCI-E as you put it:

...The problem is nowdays screwed up mobos/bioses (I mean 9xx chipsets + PCIE)

Since I have AGP and have few problems (actually I had a restart 'black screen' today!), it would appear to be an issue with new mobos and PCI-E...

But, I still think it's the drivers rather than the new hardware. Some interaction between driver and hardware?

    My two cents.

  13. Hey all,

    I see you have the MSXML 4.0 SP2 MS07-042 update 936227 / 936181 in the list.

    I have tested XML 4.0 SP2 (818081) and update builds 887606 / 832414, 925672 and 927978 with no problems.

    However, when I installed 936227 / 936181 it broke XML 4.0 in Windows 98SE!

I tested this on two seperate installs of Windows 98SE - a basic install and an update max'd out install.

To back-date, I had to uninstall the update and then manually delete the three msxml4?.dll files and then install 927978!

Even though there is an Add/Remove entry for the update, it does not remove or rollback the dll files so installing an older XML 4 build does nothing...

    soporific,

maybe you should have an incompatible section for updates that don't work in 98SE anymore?

    I am having some issues with oleaut32.dll update 924053 / 921503 and msxml 3.0 sp9 update 936227 / 936021.

I've yet to confirm these since I was having issues with XML 4 so I back-dated those two while I resolved xml 4.

I'll let you know when I have properly tested these two updates.

You don't have them listed yet and they might just fall into an incompatible section...

Interestingly, the xml updates released this year are having problems where the late 2006 updates work okay.

I bit like MS dropping the bda.cab and directx.cab files after the DirectX December 2006 release...

  14. My experience with the v82.69 drivers is that they work, but the Shutdown and Restart to MS-DOS Mode options don't work for me anymore, and the driver is to be blamed. In fact, all Eck said is fully valid for my case too. The only difference is that my videocard is 7600GT.

I have a nVidia GeForce FX 5200 and have used drivers 77.72, 81.98, and these unofficial 82.69 drivers (currently installed).

I can't really say that I've had any problems with any of them although obviously my card is officially supported in 9x.

The only time I might have a restart or shutdown issue resulting in a black screen with cursor is if the Windows 98SE kernel becomes unstable.

Okay, so I have several driver versions I can use, but it must be the actual drivers that are causing shutdown/restart issues rather than the card.

I'm using a MSI MS-6321 (694D Pro) dual PIII mobo (only CPU2 used in 98) with AGP, 1GB RAM and Windows 98SE.

I have Unofficial Service Pack 2.1a, Auto-Patcher 98 August 2007, 98SE2ME 7.4, and Revolutions Pack 7 (current update fixes nVidia related issues) installed.

I personally think that the 82.69 drivers have a noticable performance increase over the 81.98 drivers.

Many thanks to MDGx for a sweet driver suite! :hello:

  15. Hi Soporific, I've installed August release with little drama.

The KB837009 install looping is now fixed and of course the Q891711 selection bug is fixed.

However, after the OLE update installed and rebooted, I got a system message saying that C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\OLEDLG.DLL was missing and an application could not start (typical MS message that does not actually tell you what the application is!!!).

Anyway, I did find an OLEDLG00.DLL file in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.

After checking the OLE update INF, I found this file referenced.

It looks like it's supposed to be deleted when it's finished.

So I deleted OLEDLG00.DLL, extracted the OLE update, and copied over OLEDLG.DLL...

There appears to be some issue with the latest OLE update install.

I have not gone through the INF in detail yet.

All I need now is version checking of user32.dll and user.exe (like you do for other updates) for update Q891711.

Then I could select everything to install without worry about Revolutions...

    Oh well, maybe one day...

  16. This is a known problem that was identified by RetroOS, i've posted the solution a few posts above this.

    Thanks for the fix soporific.

I tested it and it worked as designed - no more blue screens - I can run Auto-Patcher and leave it to do it's thing!

Perhaps you could add to the Q891711 note about MDGx's 98SE2ME with Tihiy's Revolutions Pack?

Even better would be to version check the two Q891711 files...

The Explorer and Shell updates version check okay and will auto-skip with Revolutions installed.

I have noticed another small issue that KB837009 keeps looping...

An even less important note that you have a couple of duplicate lines in AutoPach.bat:

    echo Y> "%LOC8%\markers\@_OP0602.skp"

is duplicated in :DoSkips and :GoReport sections.

    Just for your information.

I can't wait for the August release!

    Go soporific!

    :hello:

  17. Hey Soporific, your Auto-Patcher is the best!

I've been using it for some time.

However, I have found a problem that did not occur a couple of versions ago.

I have Tihiy's Revolutions Pack 7 installed that uses different user32.dll and user.exe files.

Even though I have the Q891711 "Unofficial fix for newer cursor and icon format vulnerability" set to by-pass, it installs anyway...

    The problem?

It does not version check the two user32.dll and user.exe and back-dates them.

Since these two files are version level matched with shell32.dll and explorer.exe, Windows blue-screens on start-up.

I have to manually replace the two files from the Revolutions Pack install files part way through the Auto-Patcher install process to get back into Windows to complete it...

This has happened for the last three Auto-Patcher updates...

I have standard English US Windows 98 Second Edition.

Something to look into with your scripts.

    Keep up the good work!
