Alright we can just kill this thread, we're upgrading to Windows 2003 Standard Server. I still don't get why it can't just join a domain Thanks to those who replied!

We are currently joining a SBS 2003 to an existing forest. From what we understand, SBS server cannot be part of a domain without being a domain controller. Is this right? Are there any other ways to work around? Right now, the server is joined to the existing domain, but it will restart at every (1) hour. There is a knowledge base reference on Microsoft's web site, but I want to see if anyone ever found a way around. (KB555087) Any kind of help is welcomed ! Thanks for your time!

Hi everyone, I figured this would be the best place to post since I'm not exactly sure where the problem is originating from. Here's my problem: I set up an ASP enabled web page that works with an Access DB. The connection is configured with ODBC (MS Access Driver). The setup worked perfectly before but I had to re-install W2k3 because of a hardware failure. The Web directory has not been changed. When users go around and use the web site, everything works perfectly. At the point where I access the database from a local session (on the server) everything stops working on the web site. They get a HTTP 500 error, no more information. I figure it's a security problem or something like that, but the only way to make it work is to restart W2k3. Shutting down IIS and restarting it won't help. The database isn't locked or anything. All pages within the web site use the database except the login page, which I will occasionaly get after this error shows up; it will not go any further. Thanks for your help!

Hi Guys, I completely forgot about this thread after a while, but I finally got it working. Marsden, you're right; you can use RD on SBS. I, too, use it every day. I just walk around the office with my laptop and connect whenever I need to access the server. It's quite a wonderful tool Need to get on with my other problems now, later !

Hi everyone, I'm running W2k3 SBS in my office; I have several users that are members of the Domain, and the rest of the computers are members of 3 different workgroups. There are 2 problems that seem to have appeared recently, even though I have not changed ANYTHING on the server. The problems are the following: 1. If workgroup users trie to browse the Domain, they will get an error saying that this network is not available; (though they can run a search for the specified domain computer and access it) 2. Domain members cannot see, in any way, the workgroups or their members EXCEPT for the server itself. Even if you run a search for a computer, it will not find them. I have not touched any kind of configuration on the server, have not changed the GPO's... and I'm all out of ideas. Maybe someone has seen this problem before. I know for sure that no configuration has changed since I am the only one who has access to the server.

Hi guys, I'm having problems with the Remote Desktop utility. I basically just CAN'T get a connection running. I have read every thread, have tried many options and settings but nothing works. -I have set the options in My Computer >> Properties >> Remote -The account I'm currently trying to log on to is an Admin -Terminal Services are installed Here's the error I get (Translated from French) The clien could not connect to the remote computer. The remote connections might be disabled, or the distant server might be too busy to accept new connections. It is also possible that you cannot connect because of network problems. Try later and blabla administrator. Can someone point out a check list of some kind, or any usefull ideas? Thank you very much. (I'll be back on Monday to check out the help, if any )

Nope didn't use nslookup. There was no problem with DNS. My server had DHCP set up and was entering in conflict with existing servers; I removed DHCP from my server and let exterior ones do their job I'm still trying to figure out how things are done here

Ok nevermind, I found out by myself There was a conflict with the DHCP servers... never thought that the global IT managers would let something like that happen ! Ignore this thread

Are there any other HD's in the machine? Does the new hard drive and your CD-ROM share the same IDE cable? If so, try booting the machine with only the HD connected. Have the BIOS recognize the HD first, then reconnect your CD-ROM.

I set up this new W2k3 server with AD and domain, in an already existing network. It's been running a whole week now but I've been having problems this morning; the server is up, clients are still running in WORKGROUP mode, with automatic detection of DHCP and DNS settings. This morning, some computers couldn't access our WAN and Internet destinations for no obvious reason. They still get their IP addresses and can see each other in the local network. So I tried a few things, then decided to set one client with the DNS settings of MY local server (DHCP and DNS are done over WAN at my office, so I have no control over that) and the WAN and internet connection came back. I guess there's something with my DNS settings that get in conflict with the distant DNS server, but what? And why did the troubles only start this morning? My server's been running the whole week with the same settings. Any ideas?

Thanks BeenThere, very nice of you! But should I have been able to set up my clients from GP only? Or do you have to force it with the reg file? By the way, I deleted my AD and rebuilt it, works better now because I have fixed some errors. So I made new GPs. Another thing tho, is that whenever I tried accessing the updates site with domain user login, I get the under construction html page and my IIS settings look fine. Any ideas?

Yes that's right BeenThere, I use run-mmc-etc.... But should i be able to see "computer configuration" from the "Administrative tools menu" ? Because it's not.

Ok but first of all, to manage group policies, I have to use MMC, then add a group strategy right? I have gone through that, did get to the Windows Updates settings. Now I get this file called rsop.msc. Is that the GP setting? I'm not too sure. Everywhere I read info they say: "computer configuration->administrative templates->windows components -> windows update" just like you did, but from where do i start?

I set up MSUS on my W2k3 Server, synchronized the databases. At this point, all I should have to do is set Group Policies; This is my problem, I can't seem to find how and where to do that; I do have Windows 2003 server, but in French and I'm having trouble finding the paths. Maybe if someone explains me in his own words I'd get a better idea than the Microsoft Knowledge Base that doesn't help me at all. So if someone can give me an example I'd appreciate a lot.
