  2. I wasn't sure what was going on there. It looked like we'd entered some parallel game universe what with stepping back in time two pages and duplicating words...... I figured DOG was as good as anything at that point. Anyway, now that you've salvaged the game, I think we should just ignore BLEW and FLEW since they were the result of the diversion. 5. Is there a way to set one registry value with the data from another within a cmd file? Here's what I have: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg (Default) REG_SZ original_default_data Here's what I need: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg (Default) REG_SZ EmberImage BeforeEmberImage REG_SZ original_default_data To make the changes, I need to get the original data from the (Default) value possibly into an environment variable. REG QUERY HKCR\.jpg /ve returns too much information: ! REG.EXE VERSION 3.0 HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg <NO NAME> REG_SZ NeroPhotoSnapViewer.Files.jpg I could also do this by renaming (Default) to BeforeEmberImage but I can't find a way to do that. REG COPY copies the entire key, not just the (Default) value. I'd really like to do this in a simple cmd file without getting into vbs scripts, etc. Any suggestions? Thanks. Ray

  9. I had a similar problem. Although I had the original Dell CD, it wouldn't work to slipstream SP2. Can't recall the exact errors I was getting, but it didn't work. I went to the Dell site and requested a replacement CD (look in their support area) explaining that I needed a real XP installation disk, not a recovery disk. Don't know if I had to tell them that or not, but you will need to provide your serial number and COA key. I'm the original owner which may be important but the computer's five years old and well beyond any warranty coverage. I got an email response a few hours later and the CD THE NEXT DAY all for NO CHARGE! Excellent customer service. I was (still am) impressed. The CD already includes SP2, so I just add RyanVM's update pack and go from there. With that, you have a real Dell OEM CD which should work with your Dell machine without any problems. Hope that helps. Good luck. Ray

  13. Sorry for dredging up this old thread, but it's very interesting and I have a question about ShellState. The OP has 36 bytes in his ShellState value. I do, too, with XP Home SP2. A few of the bytes have values other than 00 or 01. The referenced MSDN page at http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms538317.aspx describes 30 bytes that can be set in ShellState. How can I map my 36-byte registry entry to MSDN's 30-byte description? Is it correct to assume that the order of the bytes right to left relates to MSDN's descriptions top to bottom? Thanks, Ray

  17. I need a little help understanding Outlook Express. I'm trying to do an unattended installation. I've found a few scripts and articles, but in order to comprehend what I'm reading, I need to better understand OE's architecture. And it appears that some of the recommendations and procedures are overly complex. I believe there are four areas that need to be addressed for a fully configured unattended installation: mail folders, address book, accounts, and mail rules. I found accounts in HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Accounts\Accounts and I assume that if I recreate those entries after installation, all of my mail accounts will be ready to go. Check. I found the address book file and was able to move it to my D: drive and change HKCU\Software\Microsoft\WAB\WAB4\Wab File Name to point to the new location. That works so I should be able to do that after installation also. Check. Help needed here --> Using OE's maintenance tab, I was able to move my mail folders to the D: drive as well, and OE sees them. That drive gets backed up every night so it's a safer place to keep the mail and I avoid the long ID serial number. What I can't figure out is where is that new path stored? Unlike the address book, I don't find a registry entry containing the path to the mail folders. OE knows where they are, so the path must be stored somewhere. I need to be able to change it after installation so that OE uses my D: drive stores rather than the defaults it will create on its own. And here --> Finally, there are the mail rules. I found some registry settings but they don't make a lot of sense and I don't know if they are complete in terms of having everything needed to recreate the rules. Is it possible to recreate these entries in the new installation and have all my rules in effect? Are there some files I need to copy as well? Can anyone point me in the right direction? FWIW, my system (XP Home SP2) has only one user (me as admin), one OE Identity, and several email accounts. I use OE rather than Outlook because it works and because Outlook gave me fits trying to read newsgroups in the past. Thanks. Ray

  22. BTW, deleting those folders will only delete the shortcuts they contain. The programs will still be installed on your system.
  23. Those folders can be found in "%UserProfile%\Start Menu\Programs" or in "%AllUsersProfile%\Start Menu\Programs". From a batch file like cleanup.cmd, just delete them (rmdir or rd) with the switches /S and /Q to delete each unwanted folder and any sub-folders it may contain, and do so without prompting for confirmation. If you're not sure which profile a folder is in, you could delete it from both but you'll be unnecessarily deleting a number of folders that don't exist: RD /S /Q "%UserProfile%\Start Menu\Programs\folder_to_delete" RD /S /Q "%AllUsersProfile%\Start Menu\Programs\folder_to_delete" RD /S /Q "%UserProfile%\Start Menu\Programs\next_folder_to_delete" RD /S /Q "%AllUsersProfile%\Start Menu\Programs\next_folder_to_delete" RD /S /Q "%UserProfile%\Start Menu\Programs\another_folder_to_delete" RD /S /Q "%AllUsersProfile%\Start Menu\Programs\another_folder_to_delete" %UserProfile% is equivalent to C:\Documents and Settings\(user name) %AllUsersProfile% is the same as C:\Documents and Settings\All Users You can also do this to create (mkdir or md) new folders if you want to consolidate things. I create a Media Players folder on my Programs menu then put shortcuts to all of my media players there. I also make a Ripping Tools folder for things like DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink, DVD Flick, etc. Ray

  25. I hope someone can help me get my head around an unattended installation of Office 2003. There's a lot of information out there, but it's not coming together for me. I only want to install selected components (Excel, Word and Access) and I don't think command line switches will allow me to be that specific. Instead, I've used AutoIt which works well for the installation but I still need the service packs and hotfixes. I think I can slipstream the service packs then do an unattended install but that will install everything and I only want certain applications. Argh! Is there a way to update my installation files with the service packs then use AutoIt to perform the custom installation? Can I "install" the service packs and hotfixes via my AutoIt script after installing Office? Can I update the installation files then install the selected applications individually using command line switches for the serial number, etc. without using an AutoIt script? I don't see multiple setup files unless they're buried in cab files. I've found many of the Options and Customization settings for Excel in the registry and can set things to be nearly perfect from the first time I run the program. I cannot find a reg setting that forces full menus (in Excel, it's: Tools ~ Customize ~ Options ~ Always show full menus). Does anyone know how to set that without going through the Excel menus? Finally, how do you activate Excel's Add-In programs? This question has been asked at least a couple of times without response so I'm not holding my breath on this one. I can see the registry changes that occur as each Add-In is installed but that's only part of the integration. Something must also need to be installed in Excel for the Add-Ins to work. Are there executables that can be run from a command line to individually and fully install each Add-In? Currently, even after making all of the registry adjustments, none of the Add-Ins is active or checked on the Add-In list (Tools ~ Add-Ins) in Excel. In fact, on starting up, Excel displays a warning that the (which "the", it doesn't say) Add-In cannot be run and asks if I want to install "it" now. If anyone can help me sort this out, I'd really appreciate it. I've gotten through the whole unattended installation process including a number of applications but I'm hitting a wall with these Office details. Thanks. Ray
