  1. Before you start running additional wires (how are you going to get the new ground wire into the outlet box?), you ought to check out a few things. In some older buildings, the in-wall wiring is BX cable and the metal jackets of those cables are physically attached to the metal outlet boxes and to the earth ground at the circuit breaker panel or fuse box. Metal conduit works the same way. The box is attached to the conduit which is attached to the earth ground. You may already have a grounded box and only need to attach a ground wire to it and your new 3-prong outlet to get a grounded outlet. What I would do is to buy a grounded outlet, a ground pigtail (green) wire and a little green clip to attach it to the box. Install the new outlet using the existing black and white wires and the new green one. Then get an inexpensive tester for $10 and see what you've got. The tester I'm thinking of looks like a three-prong electrical plug but has a set of LEDs that light up depending on how things are wired. If it indicates an open ground, then your boxes are not grounded. Some even have a button you can push to trip a ground fault outlet's internal circuit breaker. That's how those little adapters that convert a two-prong outlet to a grounded receptacle work. The assumption is that the box is grounded, the 2-prong outlet is attached to the box with metal screws which extends the grounding to the frame of the outlet, the adapter is attached to the faceplate screw of the frame of the outlet and therefore, the adapter is grounded. Come to think of it, that would be an even easier test. Plug one of those adapters into the two-prong outlet and be sure to attach the tab to the faceplace screw. Now, plug in your tester and see if it indicates a properly wired grounded outlet. If so, then you can go with the grounding pigtail and replace the outlet. If you have plastic boxes, that won't work because you have no place to attach the grounding pigtail wire (plastic won't serve as a ground no matter what kind of cable is in the walls) and the two-prong outlet attached to the plastic box won't be grounded for use with the adapter. Of course, none of that is as good as attaching a 12 gauge bare copper wire to the grounding terminal of the new outlet and running it directly to a solid earth grounding point. What you need to create is a reliable solid path for the electricity to flow back to the earth in the event of some electrical failure. Technically, the white or common wire of an electrical circuit attaches to ground at the breaker panel. The ground wire is an added measure for safety. If you do run your own ground, you'll have to find a way to get the wire into the box (so it can be attached to the new outlet) and to the earth ground. You could drill a hole in an outside wall behind an electrical box and run the wire outside then to a grounding rod. Or you might find a way to get the wire into an unfinished basement and look for a path to a grounding point there. None of that is easily done, but it's better than ripping the walls open to run new wires. Good luck if you're on a second floor. A lot of times, when heavy equipment is installed, a bare wire is attached to a water supply pipe because those pipes go into the ground like a grounding rod would. That assumes you have metal plumbing. But there are caveats. Sometimes, plumbing lines are intentionally isolated so that you can't just attach to the nearest copper pipe and assume you have a ground connection. Look at where the plumbing enters the house and attach at the point closest to the entry as you can. You can buy a simple clamp that fits around the pipe and has a screw to attach the ground wire. Your local hardware store or home center should have plenty of books on how to do all of this. Another option is to post a question on the likes of forum.doityourself.com. I've had good luck getting answers to questions there. Good luck.
  2. I like the show, but I like the original British version better. In fact, in some of the early Amercan-version shows, they used some of the exact same gags (office supplies in Jello, for one) that were used in the original version but with the new show's cast. The Office makes me uncomfortable for some reason and I get embarrassed for the characters, especially Michael Scott. They're all funny, but I have to cringe when Michael opens his mouth. As for looking like a documentary, that's the premise. Supposedly, management has allowed a film crew to record the goings on in a "typical" office for some kind of documentary. So when things get tense, the cast glances at the camera like they've just remembered that everything is being filmed. Ricky Gervais deserves a ton of credit for the concept and the original series. Which character am I most like? I won't touch that one.
  3. I AVER that if EVER it was time for another paragraphical post, it is now EVEN if makes no sense. In his OVEN the OXEN was roasting. From time to time he'd OPEN the door to check on it. The aroma was an OMEN of the feast that was to come. OWEN had invited some of his friends over for Christmas dinner. He OWED them that much after the last time when he AWED them with the AGED cheese he'd made. Most of them were ABED for weeks after that episode. He'd thought he'd ACED the recipe but somehow the bottle of ACID that was AMID the spices in his cabinet ended up in the cheese. Being an AVID fan of the Food Network, though, he learned to cook other meals and soon found a recipe for oxen that were only available in very ARID regions. After laying out a GRID on his map, he found that he was not far from a herd of the animals. That put a big GRIN on his face. When he got a GRIP on himself, he planned out his TRIP. He didn't notice the DRIP from his canteen. After a few days with no water, he was ready to DROP when he stumbled on a CROP of cacti. While he was refreshing himself on cactus, he heard the distinct CLOP of oxen hooves. He hurled a CLOD of dirt at one of the beasts as it PLODded past. He thought it was a good PLOY until he realized that it only angered the oxen which began to chase him. But this was no wild oxen. It was attached to a PLOW and the PROW dug into the soil anchoring the huge animal in place. Owen stopped to TROW about what to do next. He broke into a TROT back to the animal just as its owner arrived. He negotiated a TRET and bought the animal then started his long TREK back home. There, he tied it to a TREE until this morning when he prepared it and put it in the oven. It was TRUE that this would be a better meal than the last, but just to be sure, he took his TRUG and went off in search of a DRUG that would cure any illness that might befall his guests. Merry Christmas to everyone!
  4. Thanks, guys. I'd thought about AutoIt (used that before for installing some software) but when I looked at reading from a file, it got pretty complex. I'll check out AutoHotKey, but the main page on that link doesn't allude to reading and writing from and to a file. I've just downloaded MacroExpress and will give it a try. I know everyone wants everything right now, but in this case, if I have to spend two weeks learning to automate this process, I might as well do it by hand and be done. Again, thanks for your advice and suggestions. I'll report back on how it goes. Ray
  5. I need to logon to a vendor's web site (I can do this manually) then run a script or macro to: 1. Read a local file, one line at a time 2. Insert the read value into a specific field on the web page 3. Click a button (Go, Search, Continue, whatever) 4. Wait for the next page to appear 5. Read the text from a certain field 6. Write the original value and the result to a different local file 7. Repeat the first six steps until reaching the end of the first file I know errors could occur, but I'd rather get as far as I can, crash/timeout and restart than to manually type 100's of alphanumeric values and write down the results. Surely, someone has needed to do such a thing before. I've been searching for browser macro/script/automate and haven't found anything that sounds like it will do the job for less than a few hundred dollars. Is there some utility that will do this or a relatively simple language that I can use to program it? If anyone can point me in the right direction, I'd sure appreciate it. Thanks.
  6. WOW! I've been busy with some other research for the last few weeks and haven't been back here to contribute. Looks like you've been busy, but I do think the game is dead this time. I can't find any words to follow AKOT, even referring to a list of Scrabble-approved words. But here's something sad. For all the 1,714 unique words we did find, there are still 2,474 legitimate words not used! Most are words I wouldn't think of (EDHS or HUIC), but there are a lot of common words left like AGES, DRIP, RUBY and TUNA. Oh well, better luck to us all next time. Ray
  7. And here I thought this game was over. 8. GAME OVER? The only word I can find is BURK Burk or Burke (bûrk), Martha Jane Known as Ca·lam·i·ty Jane 1852?-1903. American frontierswoman and legendary figure of the Wild West. Often dressed in men's clothing, she was reputed to be a crack shot and an expert rider. Okay, so it's a proper name but we've used them before. If it's acceptable, we can play on. If not, it's been fun. For the record, there are still over 2,500 legitimate words without resorting to proper names.

  14. Time for a new story: Meahwhile, back on the WADY, the LADY was being LAZY. It was a HAZY day on the oasis but through the HAZE she could GAZE out at her GAGE trees. She was GAGA over those plums and was imagining past GALA events where she and the other GALS would invite some of the GAYS over to catch some RAYS au naturel. Yeah, those were the DAYS, she thought, before the DAMS flooded out the DAWS and the new LAWS made it illegal to lay on your own LAWN after DAWN. But now she just YAWNed and looked around for something to PAWN. If she could just get her PAWS on some money she just might get a PASS from the loan sharks until someone PAYS her for all of these PADS she made. They were good pads, but she made them too big. She planned to call them "PEDS Pads" and thought people would wear them in their shoes. But they were big enough to use as BEDS and she was getting no BIDS on them on eBay. She found plenty of things to buy for herself there, though. Mostly marital AIDS but also some cosmetics for her eye LIDS and LIPS. Of course, she wouldn't need any of that if she started running LAPS instead of taking NAPS. But her MAPS were incomplete and she knew she couldn't even find her own PAPS without directions. Maybe she could fill some of the GAPS in her income if she had a couple of GATS and could hunt down some RATS that were low in FATS. She could cook them up in VATS and ship them out in VANS. There were plenty of scrawny looking rats running up and down the VANGs of the ship that brought her here. She could sure use the help of her old GANG but they were all HANGed after they SANG in the local pub. It was some song about driving the TANG of a pitchfork into the eye of the king that did them in. The idea of exporting rat soup still RANG in her head even if she had to do it by herself. Then, BANG! She had an even better idea. Put it in a BONG and smoke it! Low fat smoked rat soup. Who wouldn't want that? All she needed was a catchy jingle, but it had to be played on a GONG since that was the only instrument she had; the rest were all GONE. She knew she'd have to HONE her skills since she didn't know how to play the gong but she was determined to make this idea work. 20. The problem with most compatible ink for Canon printers is that Canon puts a chip on the cartridge that helps the printer monitor ink levels. Most compatible cartridges say "without chip". I don't know how important it is to have that chip or if it can be overridden, and not all Canon printers care, AFAIK. It's my understanding that if you refill a Canon cartridge, the chip doesn't reset so it still thinks you're out of ink. I've been considering a new MP970 all-in-one but the ink has me concerned. It takes seven cartridges at $12-$15 per cartridge. If they last a year, on average, it might be okay, but if they last a month...ouch! So MY question is does anyone have any experience with non-OEM cartridges in a higher end Canon printer?
  21. That's almost surprising. It seems Wal-Mart is everywhere but I know better. I was watching The Amazing Race one time and the teams were driving down some highway in Chile or Argentina and drove right past a Wal-Mart. I like Wal-Mart because they're usually cheaper than anyone else and you can get everything under one roof from dinner to underwear to electronics, and get your oil changed while you shop. Some of their stuff is junk but you could say that about any retailer who's trying to appeal to such a broad audience. A lot of people hate Wal-Mart just because they're big and that makes them a huge target (no pun intended). People complain about Wal-Mart not treating workers fairly as if every little mom and pop store that Wal-Mart is accused of single-handedly running out of business, offers full medical insurance, a month of paid vacation time and $25.00 an hour to their clerks. But I digress from the topic at hand. I don't know whose assets or stocks are more valuable, Wal-Mart's or Google's, but I do think that Wal-Mart is of more value to the populace than is Google.
