  1. I am currently using McAfee. In the Anti-Spam section, they allow you to set up a block which contains a string of characters in the sender's address. I just went in and set up that block. However, I don't really know what's going to happen to a message that is blocked. Where will it go ? Nowhere ? I can't tell in their documentation.
  2. I don't know if they allow IMAP. I called Earthlink this morning about this subject. They were of absolutely no help. And I have a feeling I was speaking to someone in India.
  3. I am currently using Earthlink email and download my emails using Mozilla Thunderbird. I've been on Ask.Com and brought up a nice list of other free email applications. I would like to do is the following : I would like to block emails that have a certain string of characters in the sender's address. For instance, if the address ends in "ca.in" I would like to block these emails. I am not interested in moving said messages to a spam folder or other such folders. I am really looking to delete said messages from the "pop server" or deleting them during the download such that they never get downloaded at all. Earthlink has a spam filter but only for exact email addresses or full domain names. Thunderbird lets you examine a string of characters but only after the message is downloaded. So --- can any application out there prevent the download of emails based on the criteria a user defines ?
  4. Thanks for your input. I currently have an Epson Stylus Color 440. Yes, it's an old model. I'm sure I got it around 1999. It has worked well all this time but it is getting old. I can tell by the sound of it that perhaps internals, like belts, etc, are starting to wear. Since this is for home use I don't need anything fancy --- just a simple printer. I would like one that also prints pictures sharply and clearly. I have saved a number of pictures (jpg format) and I've noticed thay don't print very well (not too sharp at all). It is very easy to change the ink cartridges on my current printer. I'd also like to buy a new printer which is equally easy to replace the ink cartridges. I've been happy with Epson. After all, it's lasted well beyond my expectations. Any further suggestion would be welcome !!
  5. I'm not sure this is the correct forum to ask this question --- but here goes. I'm looking to replace my home printer. It can be an impact or laser model (no preference). This printer is just for home use, not for any buusiness use. It MUST be 100% compatible with Vista. I would welcome you input, based on your experience, of what you think are some of the best products currently on the market. THANKS !!!

  7. Thanks for the respnose. I use the simple method of copying files. I insert the disc, bring up my Documents, click on a particular file or folder and use "Send To" the E-Drive. I do know that I have actually deleted files from the CD-RW on occassion. Since files are actually not deleted but "hidden" then once the disc has no "free space" I assume that would prevent deleting a file --- no where to "hide it". I have seen a "compress" option but not sure if that would apply only to the disc itself. I can look into those outside programs but it may be that I'll just have to erase the CD-RW and do another back up of my files.
  8. I'm not sure what Forum to use for this question --- thought I'd try it here first. I back up selected word files and folders on a CD-RW. About twice a year I'll update the disc by deleting, updating and adding files. When using the disc today, no matter what file or folder I "right clicked" on, the "delete" option would not apear. Previosly I never had this problem. I looked around at "properties" -- couldn't see anything new except for the fact there is no longer any "free space" on the disc. That would explain why I can't add a new file but does not explain why "delete" no longer occurs. Can anyone help ??
  9. Hi, I have Office 2007 -- Excel 2007. I brought up one of my Excel docs and I must have clicked on something because there is now a veritcal area on the left. The top has the numbers 1,2,3 and 4. There is also some sliding scales with "+" and "-" buttons. These scales seem to suppress certain lines on the spreadsheet. I have no idea what this is called so I could find out how to get rid of this thing via "help". So -- how do you get rid of this thing ?
  10. I was just looking at that area this morning. I did notice that "Dial whenever a netwok connection is not present" was selected. I figured that I should change it to "Never dial...". I'm sure that's the solution -- so I did change the setting. I am pretty sure that one of the weekly/biweekly Windows or Vista updates changed my connection settings. I certainly did not change them myself. Thanks for the info and confirming my hunch.
  11. I've recently noticed that a "Dialup Connection" box pops up when I initially boot up (after Windows has loaded). Actually, sometimes it appears and other times it doesn't appear. This most likely started happening when I downloaded one of the periodic updates. I realize that many of you no longer use a dial up connection but I still have one set up. Therefore, those reading this missive may have never seen this occur recently on their PC. There may be a general area that I can check concerning this event. Perhaps there has been a change to my executables at start up ? Any help would be appreciated.
  12. I'll try to make a long story short : After buying a new PC with Windows Visa, I had to buy a new scanner from HP. They assured me it was Vista compatible. However, when I received the scanner (model G4010) I found the CD did NOT include Vista. I went on their web site to download the software. The small download worked fine but their extensive "Photosmart" software was too large for my "dial up" connection so I asked them for a CD which they recommended on their web site. Turns out they never had a CD with Vista !! They lied. I reported them to the Better Business Bureau in California. Finally, after 3 months, they send me a CD with their "Photosmart" software. Guess what ? When I tried to load this CD I received the following error : "The installer has insufficient priviledges to modify this file : c:\windows\system32\flash\flash9b.ocx I reported this error to HP support. What did their Indian Support Center tell me ? "There must be an error on the CD, so download the Photosmart software". CATCH 22 : I wanted the CD because I couldn't download "Photsmart". Their CD has an error they tell me to download the software ??? So much with dealing with their Indian Support Center. I put in a new Better Business Complaint. I'm so frustrated with this garbage. Bottom Line : Anyone else having problems with HP Scanners and Vista ? Any advice or help ??
  13. I just bought a new Desktop a month ago. I put in a CD to backup some files and nothing appeared to be happening. I clicked on "Computer" and found that my "DVD CW" Drive ("E" Drive) was no longer listed. I called Support and they told me that there is a known problem with Vista. Certain software downloads are incompatable and can cause the "E Drive" to be deallocated. I ran a Checkpoint Restore to get my "E Drive" restored. Does anyone know where one can find a current list of software that causes this problem ? Is there any mention of this problem in the Mircrosoft Support Site ?
  14. Here's a mystery that perhaps someone can solve for me. If I go into Internet Options and delete ALL history entries, the drop-down menu at the top of Internet Explorer (showing web sites previously visited) become blank. That makes sense. However, if I bring up a list of History entries, right click on one or more of those entries and click on delete, the entry is deleted from the Hisotry file BUT it still remains in the drop down menu at the top of MIE. Is there a setting that will delete the entry in the drop down window when an individual History entry is deleted ?
  15. I used ScanDisk on my old Windows 98 PC to fix bad clusters. Is there any identical software with Vista ?
  16. Hi, I'm new to the forum, so I hope I'm asking for help in the right place. I just bought a new PC with "Vista". I had taken a backup of my Word Documents from my old computer. The backup is contained on 3 floppys. I tried to use the "Restore" function but to no avail. Can anyone give me a hint as to how I can copy my backup file into my new PC ? Thanks.
