  1. Hi all. I have some issues regarding the Default User, Curent User and HCKU. Everything is meant here only in context of one PC, not from machine to machine. _______________________________ IS there any difference between 1) copying a profile through "startmenu/control panel/system/advanced/user profiles/settings/COPY TO" and 2) manually copying "profile files" from docs and settings from one profile to another profile, with maintaining appropriate user rights? ____________________________ There are a few things I cannot do during Windows XP SETUP phase. Default User is not interactive during Windows SETUP (explorer does not run) For example, 1) It is not possible to change ICON locations on the desktop; 2) If I install applications after XP setup finished, on the first boot, there are some, that install in per user mode. All these new settings go to current account (not default user). But I want them for all profiles. Therefore I need to replicate these new settings once again to default user. How can this be automated? Can somebody help scripting this in VBS please? Or is there any other, better method? Is it possible to have some "wallpaper" over the top , when this would happen, in order to "stay away from keyboard untill finished" efect to user sitting in front of that? _______________________________ The CHANGE button (for setting correct permisions) in PERMITTED TO USE section located in "startmenu/control panel/system/advanced/user profiles/settings/COPY TO" 1) does work corectly when copying from "c:\document and settings\profile-ONE" -> "c:\document and settings\profile-TWO" 2) does NOT work corectly when copying from "c:\document and settings\profile-ONE" -> "c:\ANY OTHER FOLDER\profile-TWO" (when I am creating a roaming profile) ACLs, user rights screw up and it is not possible to log in it. Am I right or Am I missing something here? _______________________________ Thanks for your suggestions.
  2. MS office XP Adaware etc... You are right. Now I remember seeing a thread cca 2 months ago discussing msi switches. I didnt realized that there are univerzal msi switches, i thought that for every msi installer has only its own unique. Also the official Office XP guide does not contain the /QN switch, only /qb-. Thanks for help.
  3. How can I change it? During my unattended CD sessions, regardles of what tools to run I am using, some of msi installers just show up. Is it possible to set up the XY position on which they show up? (Mazin - the msi guru could know...) I would then move them to some "invisible" position, so that the install proces wuld be a better aesthetical experience.
  4. Oh, I secretly hoped, you found a solution to turn on/off the network interface conectivity. Because its not available anywhere on the web at all, and I was searching very hard for it. But nevermind, this icon thing is very good. I switch it on manually everytime a new windows is installed. Now there is a script for it. Thanks.
  5. Please specify which one is true for your script, just to be sure - what exactly does your script turn on.... 1) Showing the network interface icon(s) in taksbar , whether the cable is connected or not. 1) Turning on the network interface (active or disabled)

After some research I got the idea to set the explorer hive to nothing,so that after login to the same account nothing happens and the start menu does not come. However I had the ctrl+alt+del available and I could call the regedit from it. I checked all the tweaks and they were there incl. the wallpaper setting. Remember I was logged in, but the shell was not running. I used a modified regtweak.reg for that Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop] "Wallpaper"="" "WallpaperStyle"="2" "OriginalWallpaper"="" "SCRNSAVE.EXE"="" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon] "UIHost"=hex(2):43,00,3a,00,5c,00,69,00,6e,00,73,00,74,00,61,00,6c,00,6c,00,73,\ 00,5c,00,63,00,75,00,73,00,74,00,6f,00,6d,00,55,00,49,00,5c,00,63,00,75,00,\ 73,00,74,00,6f,00,6d,00,75,00,69,00,2e,00,65,00,78,00,65,00,00,00 "Shell"="" After I switched the explorer hive back to explorer.exe and relogged to the same account as before...the account logon went on sucesfully and I got the start menu and everything. But the wallpaper setings went away and were reset to that bliss.jpg again. What is wrong pls..? My sugestion is that those HKCU tweaks ARE applied but right after the first logon the are overwritten back to default settings.
  7. I found a solution, MAZINs method of creating an unattended MSI package, by using WinINSTALL LE 2003. I checked the option "show basic user interface only" and deleted the reg entry "Schedule Restart". The program installs unattended, the only problem I have that the Program Icon does not show up contrary to normal instalation. Maybe Mazin knows, how to workaround it.
  8. Nobody heard about it before? Strange... It is a FREE program... here is the description and you can download it here.
  9. Metaproducts Download Express. What is the solution?
  10. What's the solution? I tried "/s" and also "/qn /Reboot=Suppress", none of them work.
  11. Hey Man. Don't give up. I have definitely a few sugestions and ideas and also some solutions that are interesting. I live in the GMT+1 time zone and I am fully available from 5 pm. to 12 pm...That 5 pm here is 11 or 12 pm in Sydney. But if you contact me through the day I can arange my time to have some free time. We could have a conversation on MSN messenger. You can also contact me at kristian@rebus.sk anytime and leave a note you are online.
  12. MTCs description of GPO is IMHO not that exact one, I think it misses the point at all. In this particular problem, the solution IS possible. And you dont have to fiddle with reg files at all. Do this: ON a running system, go to GPO editor, as I said, using gpedit.msc. Edi everything completely. Then, go to directory "C:\windows\system32\GroupPolicy\" and save its content somewhere. Save everything accept the "gpt.ini" file. Then, when doing the unattended CD proces, simply allow some script to run the GPO editor, (this MUST be done at least once, because the GPO floders are created in this moment) then close the editor (by script), note that noting was edited only open and close, and then finally copy (by script) that saved content mentioned above to the folder "C:\windows\system32\GroupPolicy\" on a new system. the GPO setting are then applied after account logoff/logon.
  13. GPO functionality is ON by default. Even if you make some change in settings, they are applied instantly. However, if you dont have any setting set up or switched ON , nothing happens. You probably mean that if they they would be ON , the start menu would be reduced or limited, but it is only optional and YOU must make these settings by yourself. By default none of the various options are set up in GPO.
  14. Hi. I want to install drivers via VB or WSH script. Let say I have a monitor that has installed "drivers #1". I wold like to be able to specify in script, that it is the Monitor device (or any other device - I should be able to choose from type - SVGA, Monitor, keyboard, mouse etc...) , then to be able to specify the location of new driver, and then the script would install the new driver. Is this possible?
  15. As a part of the my unattended XP setup process, I would like to force my setup to set my monitor type to "AOC 9Klr" instead of setting up Plug and Play Monitor Driver? Iam using batch scripts to do a lot of things. a id like to use one for that too. The monitor is simply not detected. The driver signing policy in HKCU is set to 0 everywhere possible. When I run AIDA32, inspite of that Plug and Play drivere present, it is detected by AIDA that the monitor is a AOC model. I assume that the monitor has everything to be succesfully detected and that the problem is in XP. How can I do that? How can I reinstall drivers silently and for a particular already present hardware? :/
  16. With the help of some people, I finally found a very useful utility that is capable of decompressing Instalshield CABs. It name is i6comp and u can download here. I think it may be usefull for all the people that are trying to have their unattended CDs the smallest possible. It is without GUI, so the best is to copy it to c:\windows and use the command line. Have a nice day
  17. unplug your ethernet cabel. try some removal tools. If there's not enough time...put your HDD into a clean, antivirus-protected environment as a secondary drive and clean it up.
  18. Because this one is a specialized installation that requires to be installed and partly configured in network #1, and than, it is physically moved to various another locations - network #2 to #7 as a cloning master. And since it is not possible for me to travel to these locations, for each of these locations there is a preconfigured script, that contains literally hundreds of settings and reg changes and configs, in a form of a "magic button" (it really is one button - a shortcut to a that script). They just run the appropriate button and everything will be done for them incl. that workgroup.
  19. I got this one too...sometimes, to resolve a problem, all you need is a good sleep I downloaded a tool called NETDOM.EXE, but not the newest one, you need specifically the version 1.8 that is a part of Microsoft Windows NT4 resource kit. You can download it here This version is the last one, that supports workgroup name change. In Microsoft, they don't care about workgroup much more these days, only AD, those little sneaks.... it took me one hour to find out... I put it into c:\windows\system32 folder and used a following syntax in commandline netdom member \\computername /joinworkgroup newworkgroupname THANX ballsup for netsh..it works perfectly. As I said in other thread before, I hope somebody will find this usefull...
  20. XP pro I suppose it should be irrelevant anyway, whether pro or home. Thanks for netsh... And changing workgroup? C'mon, not a single vbs guru here?
  21. 40 views and nothing...allright, not that easy one. I found it at last... not a REG tweak though, a GroupPolicy setting. StartMenu/Run/"gpedit.msc" User Configuration/Administrative Templates/ set "Remove RUN menu from StartMenu" to ALLOWED. The sideeffect is that you don't have access to STARTMENU\RUN anymore. Actually, a good sideefect for me, because its a thin client, I am fiddling around with. Off course, I am not able to run the Group Policy MMC console from the RUN anymore because its not there...one would think its a trap... No problem - you can still locate "gpedit.msc" in C:\windows\system32 I Hope you will find this info helpfull...
  22. How can I change the name of workgroup the machine IP adress the DNS adress the gateway adress the subnet mask on standalone machine using VBS script or Batch file? 1/2 hour of googling did not help.
  23. How can I disable to execute local paths in adress bar in Internet explorer? If you put for example this - c:\folder - into IE6 adress bar, it simply goes there. Off course I do not mean to disable somebody to write it there. I mean when he presses ENTER, then nothing shoud happen. I want only HTTP or web pages allowed.
  24. Hi all, I have a question specifically for @prathapml, off course any other answers are also welcome. Contrary to most of the people here that use their unattended cd mainly for home purpose, I often have to configure an OEM system. I use mainly Intel and MSI motherboards and MSI components where possible. The process I do, is same all the time regarding software (setup Win XP, drivers, WU, customization, office XP, Antivirus, some basic utilities), only the hardware is changing all the time and so is changing the driver base needed. What I am specifically interested is 1) how @prathapml accomplished his driver base as he mentiones in one of his threads. Intel INF update is OK, but what about VIA chipset drivers, and SiS mobo drivers? How can I be sure that the INF and CAT files I extract, provide everything needed for my hardware? How did U extracted VIA drivers (INFs and CATS at all), where did U get them? (via4in1 is a mess, is VIAMACH.INF enough?) 2) Most of the drivers for onboard components are in a form packaged exe that after extraction has the form of "directory structure + root files + setup.exe". For example Intel onboard SOUND is packaged like this. After extraction there is a setup.exe, some files and dirs. One of directories is "smaxwdm" (means probably soundmax wdm drivers) and contains INFs and CATs. But How can I be sure that it is enough for hardware to work? What if the setup.exe adds some registry entries that will be missed if I use the INF driver instalation method? Off course, I could do a system state screenshot before and after and compare the registries. But what if the reg entries are system specific and are not transferable? 3) Most of the driver packages forementioned contain DATAx.CAB files. I suspect that THEY ALSO contain the INFs and CATs needed. But those CAB files are never in Microsoft Cab format. The SETUP.EXEs don't have any switches that would provide extraction of CABs. Does somebody know a tool to extract CABINET files not in MS format?
