  1. Apparently, it may have something to do with HyperThreading, since disabling it helped a bit, but it still crashes sooner or later.
  2. Guys, Thanks for the input, I did what you both said (MemTest found no problems, but I stopped it after the first pass because it is very long), and even removed the sound card, replaced the graphics card by an Nvidia one but the problem is still there ! My chipset is Intel i875P, if that helps... I don't have any other idea anymore...
  3. Hi, I am running into a quite strange problem that I can't seem to find a solution to... I have an unattended DVD with many programs and drivers: I use it on my four computers (office desktop+office laptop / home desktop+personal laptop). I upgraded my dvd to Windows Server 2003 SP1 a few weeks after it had been released and I had no problems on three computers out of 4 whatsoever... But, I didn't had a chance to reformat my office desktop because it wasn't the proper time for that, but today, I decided to reformat since the system was getting crappy... I did as usual, booting from the DVD, Windows Text Mode installation started, I deleted my C: partition, recreated it as usual and Windows started to copy its file (still in text mode as usual). Then it rebooted, and when the setup is booting to its second stage (the graphical one), I got a BSOD: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL etc... sometimes it changes and sometimes things looks like they are going really badly since the BSOD doesn't even print out completely (some lines at the end are missing). Booting into safe mode didn't even work ! I tried fresh reinstalls several times but with always the same results. First thing I did was to update the aging Bios by a newer one (A01->A07), but it didn't solve anything... I then tried to burn Win2003 SP1 to a cd (without the drivers directory used by the unattended installation : so it had only windows integrated drivers), because I thought some driver could cause that problem... unfortunately, it didn't work either... Reinstalling Win2003 without SP1 is working flawlessly, but there is no reason for it to work without it since all my computers accepted it !!! No discrimination : SP1 for everyone, I say ! And I really don't want to maintain two versions of my DVD ! Here are the specs for that PC: Dell Dimension 8300 P4 HT 3.06 GHz 1 GB 2*120 GB SATA HDD ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (<- I am wondering if it isn't the culprit : ATI isn't the most stable/conflict-free manufacturer, to say the least) Creative Audigy Intel Pro 100 VE Network Card Any idea would be really welcome... Thanks a lot !
  4. EU is also quite a bureaucracy and bureaucracy costs a lot of money and is just talks talks and very few acts... The costs of running this bureaucracy are very high and are paid with the taxes that all the current "EU" europeans pay... Think about how much all this constitution costed... It is another reason why I would have voted No! Europe didn't change my live positively, and just cost me money in the end... for now, at least...
  5. I am a french living in the UK for the time being, and I feel that you should refrain from making such comments here... Judging from your avatar, you are from the United States and like/are in the US military, so maybe that was some ressentment regarding the Irak's disagreement ? Let's get over that, mate and keep the xenophobia out of topic, since your comment didn't add anything to the topic. I wasn't in France to vote yesterday, but most people I know voted no, and if I had been in France, it is quite likely I would have answered no... because of the social rights that this constitution endangers...
  6. You can connect to the current session using Remote Desktop with the /console switch. Start -> Run : mstsc /console
  7. Thank you for your answer, but just for my understanding, if it is a codec conflict, why does it work fine on my desktop PC and sluggish on my laptop ? I used the same unattended dvd so it is *exactly* the same configuration; Thank you very much;
  8. Hi guys ! I bought a laptop for Christmas and would like to play my Divxs on it. I also have a Dell workstation (P4 2.66MHz 1024MB ram) and the playback is very smooth, even with the full quality settings. Now, What I don't understand is that the playback is not very smooth (image hangs, but sound keeps going on) on my laptop, which has a Pentium 4-M running at 3.06MHz (thus, a bit better than my one year old Dell workstation, I would think), with 512 MB ram. The software configuration is exactly the same, thanks to my unattended DVD on the workstation and the laptop and I am using K-Lite Codec Pack and Winamp 5 for the Divx playback. I assume it has to do with the fact it is a mobility processor, but still, it is 3.06MHz !!! Do you please have a logical explanation to that ? Thanks.
  9. Do you mean it actually works or did you not test it yet ? It would be really interesting. For example, apply the patch during the Windows installation and then restore the original version after the drivers have been installed.
  10. Thank you for your answer. Is it really so easy ? Isn't there some settings to set to, for example, select which network/channel/encryption/whatever you want to use ? Thanks!
  11. Hi, Maybe this post rather fits on the network part of the forum, but I feel it wouldn't be in its place there either as it is about unattended. I am considering buying a Wi-Fi router as I just got a Wi-Fi capable laptop. I also have an unattended Windows 2003 Server dvd that I use for all my computers. Is configuring Wi-Fi unattended possible, easy or difficult ? This would motive my choice to buy the router or not. Any advice is welcome. Thanks and happy new year. Read.
  12. I know, and it is not a problem as I will install the hosts file (or whatever is required to achieve this) to both my home and office PC. The problem is that the hosts file does not allow hostnames to hostnames, but only hostnames to ip conversion, which is not very useful because my ip changes everytime... Thanks anyway.
  13. Hi, I have a dynamic ip client installed on my router because my ip is dynamic... I would like to use something like 'Home' as the host name rather than xxx.dynip.com for example, which is much longer. I tried using hosts and lmhosts files but it does not seem to work. Is it possible, and if so, how ? Thanks.
  14. I tried many times to solve this problem and it is not easy to try because everytime it fails, I have to reinstall Windows again (thanks to my unattended dvd, it is not the pain in the @$$ that it could be), which is time consuming and only allows to try twice or three times a day. Here is what I get at the server after a client connects to the vpn: Please note the strange characters... Thank you in advance to everyone for any idea.
  15. Thank you for your answer... At first, the office and home routers both had their ip address set to 192.168.0.1 but I thought it might be the problem... Having the both routers on the same ip range unfortunaly does not change the problem... The routers do not allow me to set a subnet of 255.255.0.0... If you have another idea, do not hesitate... Thanks!
  16. Hello all! I have a problem with my VPN server. I have set up a vpn server on my home PC and I am connecting to it from my office PC. The routers at home and at office are the same : D-Link DI-604 and have these addresses : Home : 192.168.1.1 Office : 192.168.0.1 Subnet : 255.255.255.0 I can connect to the VPN server from the office and it works fine but I lose the internet connection at the server. In fact I am still connected : I can still browse pages from a browser already opened before the VPN connection but if I close it, I can't anymore access an internet web page. I am still connected because ping works, but I see strange (most non printables) characters instead of the ip of the server If I reboot the server, my PC IP addresses is totally different, like it does not get it from the DHCP server from the router : 169.something while my IP address is usually 192.168.1.123 and then I can't even ping : it does not work. It is a big problem since the only way I found to get the internet working again is to format my PC. Thank you in advance for your help!
  17. I am quite interested in this reg file too... Thanks!
  18. I agree with RaveRod, it isn't as simple as patching uxtheme or something like that... it requires to add functionnality to a dll without the source code and it is much more complicated than that... It would be much more easier to write a rarfldr.dll, for example, but wouldn't that be considered as a third-party app? And hacks aren't something I call "clean"... you modify a program without the source code, which is risky... especially a this level! Personally, I didn't like WinRAR much in the past, but I got used to it and like it very much now (especially since there is 7-zip archive support! - Decompression only though ).
  19. You maybe got the Blaster worm! That's one of the symptoms, especially if it also happens when copying files and not only in IE. Please check your system with a good antivirus or cleaning program for Blaster and its variants... Best regards;
  20. Thank you both for your quick answer : it is a method I previously used, but the advantage of setting the serial directly from the setup command-line is that it names the shortcuts correctly : yours must have "Demo" everywhere, because you "patch" the registration afterwards in the registry. If you pass a correct serial to the Setup program as a parameter, it will name the shortcuts accordingly, without the Demo strings as it knows by this time it is a registered version. Another benefit is that you do not need to use the registry file... Thanks!
  21. Hello, I am having a little problem with the Nero 6 installation... Here is the command line I am using : start /wait Setup.exe /SILENT /NOREBOOT /SN=XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX /WRITE_SN It installs all the files OK but there are no shortcuts at all in the start menu and the program isn't registered ! Another strange thing is that it works (program registered and shortcuts in place) 100% of the times on VMWare but once I install my unattended dvd on my real PC, the problem is still there... I am using the exe file downloaded from the nero website, I did not extract it before like some other did (I used to do that, but since there is a way to use the self-extracting installer, I decided to use it). Please could someone tell me how to solve this strange problem ? Thank you in advance !
  22. The registration is at the end of win.ini : weird, unsafe and dirty... looks like they sort of wanted to hide it... You can't append the section directly via echo : you must append it using the copy command in binary mode... You can even update it automatically using wget and 7-Zip...
  23. Do you have some musical background ? Because it sounds pretty good... From where do the voices came from ? The software ?
  24. Gosh, I knew it was made by Microsoft and not Sun since I learnt jview's existence from the MS webpage. Anyway, you were right : something was really installing some files for the MS VM : It was the Visual Studio 6 Service Pack 5... (VS6 only didn't seem to install it). Still it wasn't a complete install of the VM since the java applets couldn't be run without Sun's JRE. Now that VS6 SP6 is released, I replaced SP5 with it and Windows Update does not report this fix as needed anymore. Thank you very much.
  25. Thanks for your answer. I confirm it was a fresh install from scratch : not an upgrade from a previous OS.
