umm probably this option sounds better.. try to strip 2003 explorer to the max... remove features inside this explorer.. Ill search for registry tweaks allowing that
0 -
umm but after check all these posts.. no solution is available... and the info seems gone..
Anyone conserve the info or much better the edited files to replace the XP shell with the NT4 one?

Check how fdv tested the NT4 shell (which is even faster) on 2K, possibly a method that is similar may work.

wow thanks for the info!!! exactly the thing I was looking for

Im using a nlited 2003 version.. stripped at max.. and no themes or stupid visuals enabled. Everything off... (I only look for max performance in the programs that I really want to use.. and not waste resources in GFX/visuals/etc)
Maybe there are registry settings that can improve performance... use 256 color windows and icons.. (if anyone have ones.. plz post). I can downgrade happily if that will speed up the GUI
Anyway the classic GUI of 2000 performs faster than 2003 one... probably M$ killed the fast 2000 gui when they wanted to add support for themes in the XP/2003 gui

The reason for use the 2000 shell is cause is fast.. and and pleasure to use.
When I did some tests.. the performance between 2003 and 2000 is similar... but the 2D GUI
My idea would be have the best of both worlds.. Everyone that uses 2000 knows the pleasure of have a fast GUI.. but there is no reason to continue using 2000 since 2003 is more compatible with current programs than 2000
I dont have the knowledge to create an hybrid like that.. but would be a nice project.

I was testing lately 2000 and 2003.. the explorer.exe in 2000 is really much faster and responsive than 2003(XP)...
I wonder if could be possible use the explorer engine of 2000 into 2003. Some registry changes can help? or I need to replace files?
I remember the 98lite project.. where they used the fast win95 shell into win98.. they did the trick replacing some files of 98 with 95 ones.
I wonder if there is something similar for 2003.. cause 2000 shell is really fast.

thanks for the info pal..
seems that Ill stay with 2003 forever.. or until m$ decide to bring back the 2D accel

everyone have checked these videos showing the problem in win7
my question is...
happen the same in Server 2008 R2?
happen the same in Server 2008?
currently using 2003... and I dont know if update.. I dont want a performance downgrade. Only 2D apps usage here

thanks for the info pal!! I was checking and yes.. it was a drivers problem.. so I tested new ones and now my tests are the same with audio on/off

Im using xp-sp2/q9550..
When I disable the audio service I get a really noticeable boost in cpu performance.. ( realtime rendering jobs.. and similar intensive cpu tasks)
Ok I know that nobody would disable this service by default... but why not when you are not working with audio and need extra cpu?
My question is:
There are other tricks like this one? disable other unnecessary hardware devices or other classics/default things that your apps maybe dont use and consume noticeable cpu?

hi guys!!
external USB HD with 7200.11 drive also have troubles?
It need the firmware update?
0 -
If the external drive is not formatted with FAT32 the Windows98/ME will not be able to access it. Since it is a 1TB drive, it is highly possible it was formatted with NTFS. Windows 98/ME is not able to access NTFS, I'm afraid.
drive is using FAT32.. anyway the lack of support for NTFS makes me think to go back to XP in these old computers

Have you nUSB installed?
In the win98 machine .. yes.. I have it installed..
In the winME machine not cause I never had USB problems until now
I think Its a problem of SATA drivers missing

I have a new external USB-HD drive... its an 1TB external SATA HD.
The HD works perfect in XP but the drive is not recognized into win98 and ME
There is some update/fix/hack to enable SATA in win98/ME?
Thanks

I already have very stripped XP with Nlite.. all "visual" stuffs disabled, using really few services.. and no programs loading at startup.. running all my programs as portable versions
I only look for fastest computer response.. and minimal memory usage--- so I was thinking about improving system resources using the win2000 shell instead of the XP one

cause some programs dont work properly on win2k :/

Using 98lite.. I used the windows95 shell on the michro install version for maximun performance and low memory requirements.. so OS runs very fast.
Its posible do the same replacing the XP shell by the one of win2000?
I have tried replacing just the explorer.exe file.. but ists not enough for display the start bar and the desktop. Maybe I need to replace more files than just explorer.exe
Any help appreciated

Try this :
C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL32.EXE shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll
I have ME so I don't know for sure if it woks on 98.
OUch.. seems not work here..
Anyone tried run that line on win98?
Its a pity cause I tested "traymodule" and it dont show the USB device icon for extract ;O
Also you can try to reduce to the minimum the file and directory caches. I don't know where the setting is exactly located right now but CacheBooster can do it for you.Guys this have been the best trick I have tested today... I installed the program and applied the "power user" preset settigs.
My system had 18 of 32ram free before.. but after apply these settings and reboot I have 22 of 32 ram free now!!!!
Lowering the values of namecache, pathcache will also free more memory,[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ FS Templates\ Server]
NameCache = a9 0a 00 00 (Will store 2729 filenames)
PathCache = 40 00 00 00 (Will store 64 folders)
also thanks for the tip.. I checked and seems that 98lite add that value by default

thanks for the tips guys I saved extra memory using 256 colours desktop mode... and also using the reg setting "Max Cache Icon" (100)
Btw I dont use any pic on desktop... and I dont have any shortcut icon on it or into the Index menu.. just the non removable ones like My PC and trash Bin...
About the Vcache currently Im using:
MinFileCache = 2048
MaxFileCache = 8192
I tried disabling Vcache but didnt find so much difference..
I thinking seriously about install Liteshell and save some extra memory with it.. but I have a problem..
Cause I dont have systray or desktop on the liteshell panel I cannt see the icon for unplug USB devices (for example unplug safely my USB memory stick)...
Anyone know a command line for run/open that window?
Currently I have 15mb used by the OS after windows bootup
I wonder what other things I could do for squeeze the memory a little more..

And, you don't want to just add more ram.......WHY?
That should be your first effort.
Oh yes.. you are right.. I think like you .. I prefer upgrage hardware instead tweak it for get few little extra cycles/performance
...but this time this solution is totally imposible for me.
Im running a very ancient Tiny laptop (a toshiba libretto) and its very difficult and expensive get memories for that model cause it does not use standard memopry chips. Cause its a very portable computer Im trying to get all the best from it (I use it daily)
Really computer works nice with 98lite.. my uses are listend mp3, read books/comics and maybe play some low cpu games.. but sometimes I run out of memory and I hear the HD working for the virtual memory.
Removing the systray and disabling the soundcard when I dont use it improve the memory resources... but Im not sure what more things unnistall..
My basic needs are:
-sound (when playin Mp3s)
-video (for read books/PDF or colour comics)
Hey.. maybe an old question... what colour deep is better: 8/16/24bits? I can use any of these modes but not sure what will give best performance.
For example the comics I read are scanned usually at 24bits colours. What happend if use 8 or 16 bits modes on my videocard? there are more CPU cyles needed for decode the image? maybe more memory is involved into this process?
btw.. currently my win98 consume 20mb after bootup... anyone have got smaller ammount using win98 or 98lite?
(Im not sure if Ill try winimize since I heard there are problems for add video/audio support installing drivers)

thanks for the tips oscardog Ill try to remove DLLs.. its the on thread I havent done yet..
Curently my system was running without any startup process.. no system tray no vcache.. and I got 13MB free after bootup... I wonder If Ill increase this amount abit more..
The liteshell is nice but its hard to replace the functionallity of having the desktop.
Ill continue searching ways for increase the freemem

oh yes.. I heard about winimize.. but before try it.. I would want to try other tricsk for increase the free memory on my current system.
Anyone have tried Winimize? I need the audio/video support for install drivers and also PCMCIA support. Anyon e know if they will be avilable on the winimize installation?

Hi guys..
Anyone can give me advice/tricks about ways for increase my free memory?
Currently I use 98lite with the win95 shell and for sure I have deleted all these TTF fonts that loads windows at startup and I never use (Its the typical trick I read on internet pages)
I wonder if I can disable more archives that load at windows startup for increase my free memory.
