Ok, sure but what's the risk as long as you don't jeopardize M$. AntiWPA is directly affecting their policy. We're just trying to keep our Win98 working as we like it in our (quite small) community. Personally i don't like this approach; I don't think that any MS employee works for free, so: why these guys do not deserve a wage ? MS would say: "We never asked them to do this ! On contrary, they're violating our copyrights !"
For me the priority would be:
- to get KUP moving
- correct the last Win98 problems (more than 512mb problems on many mobos...)
- make Win98 drivers for new chipsets / PCI-e cards
IMHO open source is interesting only if it helps doing this.

1. Just extract the icon from cmd.exe and change the icon of the shortcut. (of course you need Xp for that. Can send you the icon if you want)
2. Create a file named desktop.ini in your folder with this in it:
[.ShellClassInfo]
IconFile=X:\Path\Filename.ico (which points out the icon you want to use for your folder)
And finally, make your folder read-only.
3. What do you mean? Like opening a web page when you're finished playing? Only a firewall I guess.
4. Revolution Pack is your friend but without a pack? Ok, you'll have to edit resources in XP shell32.dll, extract the toolbar bitmaps, reshack 98 browseui.dll and overwrite the matching bitmaps. The problem is Win98 doesn't support XP toolbar 32bit bitmaps so you'll have to convert them. Quite long and painfull...
5. I don't know... refresh / rebuild icon cache?

You can still find configurations that supports Win98 and are recent (well it's true that it's hard and complicated but it worth it) Using a virtual machine is slow, does not use your PC capacities like a true OS and won't let you benefit from 3d acceleration.
Anyway, if you really want to do this, you've got several solutions.
Easiest one is probably to use your partition with Win98 as your VM hard disk (use physical disk instead of a virtual one).
If you don't want to stay like this, then you can clone your OS on a virtual HD from inside the VM and disable physical HD support. You'll get your clone Win98 working on a virtual drive that will become primary HD. HTH

Tell that to the guys at VH1.com. I had a subscription to their site but have been visiting it very rarely. Recently when I tried to follow a link in one of their e-mails, I got a nice message saying "sorry but your operating system is no longer supported by our site" or something like that. I have no idea if it was about Media Player version or anything else, they just said my OS was bad. So I said "f*ck them" and sent an unsubscribe reply (as instructed).
You did the right thing! But can somebody explain me how the f*** a web site can be OS dependant? Does M$ give them dollars to ban people who use OSes they don't wanna see around anymore? Because I don't see any other reason.
I guess we can still spoof our user-agent... But really, why do they even waste their time creating an OS check just to virtually exclude people using Win9x?

Well... I believe this topic shouldn't be in the Gamers hangout as it's rather a network/internet issue.
Anyway, yes, you should grant the site you're trying to connect "trusted site" status (go to config pannel, internet properties, security, trusted sites and add the link) and reload IE. And shut down Norton and Spybot temporarily.

Uli USB 2.0 driver works on GA-K8U-939(M1689 chipset).
Since NVIDIA acquires Uli, I guess they will never fix the USB 2.0 problem for Win9x/me
huh? ...well I know it's supposed to work... I was just telling you I don't have trouble with Uli USB 2.0 drivers with an other chipset (actually, M1695).
Oh, and you're right it's too bad that one of the last chipset vendor carrying about Win98 is bought by a Nvidia that only wants being Vista-ready!
@ MDGx: thanks for the links, I always thought the audigy 2 platinum didn't have drivers working with Win9x.

I built a new pc with Opteron 154. X850XT, Audigy2, and GA-K8A480M-9(ATI RS480 + Uli M1573), it is surprising that X850XT works without major problem. Good to know it works fine. That leaves us the option to build a totaly PCI-e option and still keep Win98 !
It's weird your USB 2 doesn't work. I use Uli's drivers on my mobo and they work perfectly under Win98. (though it's not the same chipset...)

More feedback for you Soporific!
Ok. This time I didn't do things half-way. I created a brand new Virtual PC, installed Win98se followed by EVERY SINGLE update I have (even the english-only one that mess up my french installation) just for autopatcher test purpose. Then ran the report function, checked what was wrong, reinstalled the updates that should not have appeared in the list just to be sure and finally ran the report again....
Here are the problems:

From what I've read, you've already corrected some of them but I was too tired to compare.
Of course, I can't test what I don't have so this test used version 1.5 of your autopatcher and for exemple, none of the unofficial updates have been tested. I'll download the missing hotfixes and stuff when I have more time and complete the list.

Here's what's new:

-Support for "Hot Plug" SATA functions
-CPU Quiet Fan Capability
-2.8v Vdimm Option
The audio card is why I would have prefer the Dual-sata2 but it was sold out. So I just use my Sound blaster. However I've tried the integrated chip for a while and it works fine on Win98. It's recognised as an USB sound device which is exactly what is is. B)

To go along with this thread, here's an exemple of recent hardware config that works on Win98: my own system. Ok. I'm a gamer so I "need" XP as long as KUP isn't totally complete. So I made a config that can dualboot WinXP and my good ol' main system: Win98.
I bought a Asrock 939 Dual-VSTA (new version of the Dual-SATA2) with both AGP and PCI-E ports. It supports 939 CPUs and even 940 with an add-on card. So it supports everything from Athlon 64 to X2, FX or even Opteron. Officially the card doesn't support Win98 (weird, it used to until it was renamed Dual-Vsta...
) but it's based on Uli chips. It's fast and different drivers are avaible at Asrock or at Uli.Anyway here's the trick: I kept my old AGP card (Fx5600) and got myself a PCI-e card. Win98 uses the AGP and XP the PCI. The only thing I needed to make that happen was a switcher to commute signal from both graphic cards to one monitor (it's cheap so no problem). The only problem I got was when I tried to add more than a gig of ram. Impossible to boot Win98, no matter how many tweaks I used. I'll try again with XMSdsk some day. But for now, 1 go is enough.
I can play every game I want today and if needed I can upgrade my AGP GPU to some nice card like a 6800 (except it's still expensive and quite hard to find), a X800 (well, when I'll but 100% sure it works) or at least a 6600GT / 9800 Pro (that I'm sure). And if some day PCI-e cards work on 98, the system will be ready.
This is my solution, post yours !

It's a Win98 forum where people have made their choice to stick with 98. And we don't have to justify everytime some XP fan wants to start a fight. Thanks for ruining this thread.

Ati Xpress 200 is officially supported. X800 have indeed beta drivers but people have already tried it with success. WinMe/98 drivers are the same. The beta stage is probably to warn users that they won't get any support. I think somebody on this forum even made a PCI-e x800 work on Win98 but I can't remember who.
However you obviously had a bad experience. Maybe more opinions could be usefull to know if it really isn't supported correctly or if you were just unlucky with your cards.

Never heard of a Canon ML-2510. The only ML-2510 I know of is a Samsung. Is it rebadged? Where can we find info about it?
