Norton Antivirus - Up-to-date Virus Defs

Hello all,

I make my first steps in the wonderful world of the unattended Windows CD.

Creating my CD, I already included several programs, one of those being NAV2003.

The question is :

How could I proceed in order to install a fully updated version (for both security updates and virus definitions, as far as it's possible) ?

(The point is indeed to avoid downloading all software and defs updates after every installation)

I got the latest virus defs pack (20040929-024-i32.exe, that is) and installed it.

I quite expected it was a self-extracting archive which I would be able to copy/paste in the right place, but it is merely an automatic installer which updates the NAV installed on the PC.

I saw a "VIRUSDEF" folder on my NAV Install CD, which I thought was the place to look for, but I still can't figure out how to place the latest definitions in there (apart from the fact that I can't copy it roughtly on the CD, indeed ;oP)

If anyone understood what I said (sorry for the approximative english, by the way, I'm a poor frenchy froggy), please let me know a way to fix that (if existing).

Thanks in advance

I extracted the latest Intelligent Updater file. In that I found a file called update.txt. A simple cmd file should solve your problem if I understand it correctly. It says:

XIV. Installing Virus Definition Files Manually

=====================================================================

If you do not want Intelligent Updater to install the new virus

definitions for you automatically, you can use the /DUMP command to

extract the virus definition files, then copy the appropriate files

to the virus definitions folder.

Installing Virus Definition Files Manually

--------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Copy the Intelligent Updater program (yyyymmdd-vvv-I32.EXE or

yyyymmdd-vvv-X86.EXE) to an empty, temporary folder.

2. Launch the Intelligent Updater program using the /DUMP command.

For the yyyymmdd-vvv-X86.EXE file, use the /EXTRACT command.

This will extract all the virus definitions to the folder. For

example, type yyyymmdd-vvv-I32.EXE /DUMP to extract the files. Or

    type yyyymmdd-vvv-X86.EXE /EXTRACT [path]where path represents

the current directory. The yyyymmdd represents the date of the

definition set. The vvv represents the version number.  For example,

the filename could be 20021231-001-I32.EXE for a December 31

    definition set.

3. Copy the files to the virus definition folder.  Copy the files to

    this location:

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs\Incoming\

NOTE: Copy the file ZDONE.DAT last. This file signals Norton

AntiVirus that the definition set has been completely loaded. If

it is not loaded last, it may cause errors.

Geez, I didn't even try to use Winrar on the Intelligent Updater File... *shame, shame*

Anyway, the third step instructs us to copy the files toward C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs\Incoming\

This is certainly used to update an installed NAV.

I guess I should copy it directly to the installation CD and replace the existing files in the ISO I created, but do you reckon I should put it in :

- D:\CD XP\$OEM$\$1\install\Applications\NAV2003\VIRUSDEF

or

- D:\CD XP\$OEM$\$1\install\Applications\NAV2003\VIRUSDEF/LATEST

folder ?

Do you think either of these 2 folders is useless ?

Some files are in both the folders, and I wonder if it installs definitions in VIRUSDEF when installing NAV, then updating with "LATEST" folder, or is it directly using "LATEST" ?

Dunno whether I'm very clear or not, but you'll let me know if not

Hey, no bothers at all.... Its not that difficult.

1. Copy the downloaded "20040929-024-i32.exe" to the norton antivirus installation folder.

2. Extract it (using winrar/winzip) all files into one folder called "Defs". So that now, there is 41 files in that folder (9.xx MB).

3. Delete the "VirusDef" folder, and rename "Defs" (made above) as "VirusDef".

That's all. I mean, you're just DIRECTLY replacing the previous folder with this new one. The "latest" folder within "VirusDef" can be deleted.

Ok but what about his second question?

I tried to find something on the Symantec pages about updating NAV2003 BEFORE installing it. It would come in handy to not only have the latest antivir defs but also the latest patches.

That is why this thread is interesting to me, I already knew about the possibility to update the definitions but not about the security updates.

There are 2 security updates to nav2003 when first installed, both of witch need a restart. Very annoying.

Merging the other updates/patches is simple too. In that sense, NAV is very cool. But we have already discussed this before, please search the forum. But for your sake:

1. Go to this page - http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/files/lu/lu.html

2. Download "lusetup.exe" (i.e., the latest version of LiveUpdate, which you normally invariably need to update after install if NAV).

3. In your NAV2k3 install folder, go to "\Support\Lupdate\" folder.

4. Replace the old lusetup.exe in that folder with the new one you just downloaded.

5. That's all! You have now merged the latest LiveUpdate into install-source (and so don't need to update it after install).

Same case with LiveReg, SEVINST, and so on..... Updating is easy, both as an administrator who's installing it, as well as a user. The other anti-viruses don't have this much of flexibility and ease. For more details on updating, etc., mazin has a wonderful guide in this thread - Norton AntiVirus Professional 2004 silent , All-In-One!.

Yes, yes... its meant for NAV2k4, but it can just as well be adapted to NAV2k3 - the main difference being NAV2k3 doesn't need activation. So just skip reading about activation, and read all other posts in that thread. You'll (hopefully) get what you want.
