I have a HL-DT-ST-DVDRRW GWA-4166B in a compaq and Need drivers to get the dvd part to work it reads cd,s and wrights to cd or cd/rw but it will not work on the dvd side at all

Optical drives doesn't need drivers at all, even to unlock certain features ...

Perhaps firmware can be upgraded, but if 'DVD' doesn't work you can say goodbye to 'dvd' feature that's all, it's dead for dvd ...

for your reply throw it in the bin brought a new dvd

burner and every thing is ok now

Note : I really do not know your system -- XP , OR, Vista -- have built in ability to burn DVD or not .

you must try before update Firmware to burn DVD with any other other program like Nero.
