After installing all the windows hotfixes using a batch file I get a windows Activation error (0x800004005) that doesn't allow me to log on to the machine. At first I didn't know what was causing the problems but I read this article below and realized that had to be what the problem was.

Has anybody had this issue before? Do you know of a way to fix this or what Update causes the problem that I can take out of the list?

My Batch file is below:

ECHO

ECHO Now installing Windows Updates

I've never seen hotfixes cause this. You could have a bad install. If this is a clean install, just try this again. If you get the same error, make sure your cd isn't doing anything like deleting wpa.dbl or unregistering files.

I know for sure this is not an Illigal copy. This was a sealed OEM package. We are a computer technition shop and we install windows at least 3-5 times a day. We were just trying to make a windows Rollout using the method from theUnattended XP Rollout Webpage Everything works fine until these updates are installed. This doesn't have anything to do with wpa.dbl file to my knowledge If you read This Article it explains the problem almost exactly. Any other suggestions?

Don't take it personally: there are probably those amongst us who have more questionable licenses. If you say it's legal, that's good enough for me.

I would suggest you run QCHAIN.EXE after the Hotfixes, in case it is a version thing. I'm not so optimistic, but you should do it before troubleshooting further ... I would love to find an example of where QCHAIN.EXE really fixed something ...

Otherwise, keep splitting the list of hotfixes in 2 until you find the guilty party. You did not state if you are running from CMDLINES or GuiRunOnce. (Sorry, i did not read the link to the end.) Updates like q817778.exe will only work correctly from GuiRunOnce.

That seems like a long list of hotfixes. Alternativly, as you are a shop and perhaps in less of a hurry that some of us here, why not try the script I wrote? Perhaps the slowest resulting in the largest distribution, but I do believe it is the most stable. Look HERE if you are intersted.

Most problems with activation deal with invalid permissions or files missing/not registered. To narrow down the problem, make sure the xp activation files are there, and register them. That'll fix 90% of the activation problems.

Just because you found one post on google describing your exact issue, i highly doubt there's a known issue with the hotfixes. If a hotfix broke activation, EVERYONE installing those hotfixes would have the same issue. Instead of finding 1 post on google, you would find 1 million.

cxe, I was having the same problem, user kyberbob also had the same prob and he found the following:

Q811632: Critical Update (Windows XP Media Center Edition Product Activation Hotfix)

Q811632: Critical Update (Windows XP Media Center Edition Product Activation Hotfix) - (Posted Date: May 14, 2003)

Download size: 337 KB

This update resolves an issue where Windows Product Activation, if triggered, cannot complete and may prevent you from logging on to the system. Download now to ensure that Windows Product Activation functions properly. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer. This hotfix is intended for Windows XP Media Center Edition systems only. Do not apply if you are running any other Windows OS.

Apparently that update only applies to Windows Media Center, and if applied to good ol' XP it will give you that error. I checked my batch and files, I had applied it. I believe kyberbob tried the batches w/out it and did not get any errors...I myself havent bothere with it again.

So it has nothing to do with either a legal or "borrowed" copy from billy boy!

ps- you do have that update on your batch

start /wait %systemdrive%\install\hotfixes\q811632.exe /Q /U /N /Z
