Quite some time ago, I asked how to keep DRM data (of WMA files I bought) when reinstalling Windows XP.

Actually, after a lot of hard work it turns out to be rather simple:

Backup/restore:

  • all files in c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\DRM
  • registry key KEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{3DA165B6-CC41-11d2-BDC6-00C04F79EC6B}

Apparently, that registry key stores the unique identifier of WMP.

So, now I can start experimenting with nLite and Ryan's update pack again :D

Any chance that retrieving the current WMP unique identifier (nLite reading it from the registry) and setting it in a nLite'd installation will be part of a future nLite release?

While it is possible I find it little too specific...gonna think about it.

Meanwhile make yourself an addon, it shouldn't be too complicated.

Actually, I'm not sure whether I would use this functionality myself...

I think I need to individualize WMP first, before using the identifier from the current installation.

Thus, storing it in a .reg file (myself) which I manually restore will be just fine.
