disabled generic drive for cd-rom and cd-rw units

Hi:

very much appreciate some help to overcome the following problem on my PC with XP service pak 2.

I have two CD units - one for ready only (Creative CD5233E-N)and one read and write(Sony CRX210E-1).

Somehow the MS generic driver version 5.1.5235.0 has become disabled and I don't know how to re-enable it.

The two drives are recognized as being installed under system information but the list show an alert icon opposite both.

I tried finding the appropriate drivers at the mfr's websites but they are not listed as being "current" models.

Thanks for anyone's guidance and solution.

Do I need to use a DOS disk approach with MSCDEXE and/or an .inf and or extract a file from the driver.cab location and if this latter is the way to go, how do I do that and identify the driver file I need

Hi,

When the devices did work correct in the past you can do one of the following:

- Go to the hardware device manager and next to the properties of the device. On the tab 'drivers' click on the button "rollback driver". This will install the driver you previously used.

- Another option is to return to a restore point from a time you knew the device was working properly.

All I can say to you guys IS THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!

It worked like a charm. I can only offer my services(free) to re-do your resume as a thank you.

I just wonder why the hell Microsoft can't post that type of info on its website and save users a whole lot of grief - you didn't know I was a comediantoo !!
