nitroshift Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 (edited) The best way to accomplish your task is to get a firewall and kill the access to the known websites. You can't disable downloads per se and say that you manage to do so, then how will you receive useful data from the internet? EDIT:Forgot to say: welcome to msfn Edited March 12, 2007 by nitroshift
con1_uk Posted March 12, 2007 Author Posted March 12, 2007 Thanks for your reply and your welcome. The firewall is not an option and it would meen going through a lot of sites. I can disable the saving of files its the running of them when you click on a download link as it still downloads to your pc and then runs from the temp internet files. If there is ever a download needed then the files will be donwloaded on another pc. Windows Updates will also be covered by a WSUS server. Can you think of another way of doing this please? Thanks again for your reply.
nitroshift Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 You misunderstood what I meant: when you open a web page, you DOWNLOAD its contents. Killing the downloads will also kill your browsing. Hope I made it more clear this time.
tech_boy Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 hey guysOn the network we run here at school we've been able to deny the kids from downloading *.exe files such as games, msn messenger (boy do they hate us for that!) but theres seemingly nothing that we can do to stop them from simply running the files as opposed to downloading them... monstrous headache, so we just deny all networks access to the internet, if they need the net, we allow access for one lesson only, even then we monitor the usage using 'Securus' .... fab piece of kit! Up until now, we havnt found a way to stop them running .exe files, we take a most defensive attitude Sorry i cant help more!jonno
uid0 Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 You could try squid and dansguardian - this allows you to deny by site, file types and file extensions

cluberti Posted March 14, 2007 Posted March 14, 2007 Have you considered searching through the sections in group policy for modifying the behavior of Internet Explorer?
