I have a 160KB file called 3LINK-ID.exe on my Desktop that will not delete. I get message file is in use by ?. This is a file I got from 3COM that was suppose to identify a intergrated 3COM ethernet port on my ASUS motherboard for purpose of getting correct drivers. I think this file is a DOS file. I have used Google to find how to remove, and more than once I have seen this: "Open a Command Prompt window and leave it open. Close all open programs. Click Start, Run and enter TASKMGR.EXE Go to the Processes tab and End Process on Explorer.exe. Leave Task Manager open. Go back to the Command Prompt window and change to the directory the AVI (or other undeletable file) is located in. At the command prompt type DEL <filename> where <filename> is the file you wish to delete. Go back to Task Manager, click File, New Task and enter EXPLORER.EXE to restart the GUI shell. Close Task Manager" I'm not sure what dos commands to use. The file path is C:\documents and settings\foz\desktop\3LINK-ID.EXE and when I open Command Prompt I get this window:

download a program called 'unlocker', install it then try to delete it using that

Dont know of a command you could use, but there is a utility called unlocker you could use. Install it and trry and delete the file. when the file comes up as locked, unlocker pops up. In the bottom left select detelte from the menu, select the file to delet and click unlock. If it doesnt work at that point unlocker will prompt you to see if you want it deleted at next bootup. If so it sets a registry key to delete it first thing on boot

Thanks to both of you, I found a program called moveonboot from Snap Files that did the removal great. I will check out the unlocker program also. I'm just an old coot trying to learn about computers.
