It is not a noise, but sounds like the fans (power supply,processor, and cabinet fans) RPM slows quite a bit after the XP logo with the scrolling blue dots (blue dots for SP2) ( green dots for SP1)quit and goes to a black screen before the welcome screen. The computer must be ok or it would not have ran all day downloading all the Microsoft updates (106) after the clean install of XP. Thanks , Foz

Thanks jeremy, The memory was ok, I guess, I let memtest run 27 passes and no errors showed. I ran Maxtors Powerblast and hard drive had corrupt files. I did a clean install and computer seems ok now. It still sounds as if it is in labor when the operating systems starts to load and stays that way until just before it turns off. None of my computer do this, must be a HP thing? I guess it is ok, I downloaded 106 XP updates and a lot of other stuff and it didn't overheat. Foz

Helping a friend with HP Pavilion 533w computer. Problem is that when booting it gets to the Windows XP logo where the colored dots scroll and after that goes off, fans seem to sound as if they are in labor, (slow down) then it reboots, back to same spot and reboots again and again etc. It does the same going into safe mode and also with a XP boot disk. I used the patch from http://grystmill.com/articles/tz_update.htm to do my computer and it worked great, I think? Gary Terhune that made the patch is a MS MSVP on the Windows XP newsgroup forum. Seems like a nice guy, he even replied to my post about installing his patch. Foz

nitroshift, I ran the Office XP Validation Wizard and it gave me this message: Microsoft Publisher completed validation, Microsoft Office XP Professional with FrontPage validation failed. Also stated Microsoft blocked the key and gave this number: 0x80180114. When I open any of the programs associated with Microsoft Office and click on the about tab, all of them give the same drop-down window, example: This product is licensed to (name xxxx) and product id 541xxx-xxx-xxxxxxx-xxxxx. In the help section of each office program, when I click on Activate I get a message that it has already been activated. Does this mean Microsoft activated these programs with the key number that was used when installed? As far as I know, all these programs seem to work, but I do not know enough about the Office programs to determine if they are fully usable. This is not my computer, I am helping a friend remove a lot of viruses and trojans that were on it. Thanks, Foz

I'm working on a friends computer that I can't get The Windows Genuine Advantage Notification Tool to install. After running the tool to check I got this report pasted below. In all programs when I point to the Microsoft Office program the first thing in dropdown list ia an icon to activate. Could it be that this program has never been activated? I would ask my friend, but he is a little less knowledgeable about computers, but is it possible the person that built computer for him didn't activate this MS program? I have a 160KB file called 3LINK-ID.exe on my Desktop that will not delete. I get message file is in use by ?. This is a file I got from 3COM that was suppose to identify a intergrated 3COM ethernet port on my ASUS motherboard for purpose of getting correct drivers. I think this file is a DOS file. I have used Google to find how to remove, and more than once I have seen this: "Open a Command Prompt window and leave it open. Close all open programs. Click Start, Run and enter TASKMGR.EXE Go to the Processes tab and End Process on Explorer.exe. Leave Task Manager open. Go back to the Command Prompt window and change to the directory the AVI (or other undeletable file) is located in. At the command prompt type DEL <filename> where <filename> is the file you wish to delete. Go back to Task Manager, click File, New Task and enter EXPLORER.EXE to restart the GUI shell. Close Task Manager" I'm not sure what dos commands to use. The file path is C:\documents and settings\foz\desktop\3LINK-ID.EXE and when I open Command Prompt I get this window: C:\Documents and Settings\Foz> Can someone tell me line by line what commands I need to use? Can I do a install repair using the Windows XP upgrade CD I have, or do I have to have the old Windows 98 cd also? Computer will boot and works, but will not boot to safe mode and sometimes get error when trying to boot normal. When I run the program AdAware from (Lavasoft) it quits responding during scan each time it gets to C:\Driver Cashe\i386. I want to try to scan in safe mode. Thanks, Foz

I'm using Windows 98se, with IE 6 and OE 6, Zone Alarm firewall and AVG antivirus. My problem is when I have OE 6 open, click on a link in an email, which opens IE 6, after closing the IE 6 link and then closing OE 6, then try to open IE 6, I get an airglass with my cursor. When I open task manager it says explorer not responding. When I click on end task in task mgr, Explorer will not close. I try ctrl,alt,delete and sometimes it will reboot computer, and at times I have to hold the on button to manually shut down. A few days ago I was trying to get it to reboot and computer booted to a message that MSVCRT.DLL in C:\windows\system folder was not found "reinstall windows". I copied the dll from another computer and that fixed that, but I'm thinking if computer keeps hanging it will lose this file again or worse.Everything else works good on this computer. I run AdAware and Spybot Search&destroy regulary. I think there is a conflict between OE 6 and IE 6 being open at the same time, but have not been able to find remedy on Google. I tried the HDD with Windows XP Pro on it and HDD was recognized in the BIOS setup but would not boot to XP. The BIOS on the Intel CA 810E m/b must not be capable of recognizing XP?? Thanks for everyones advice. Foz

I changed the motherboards today and put a old HDD in that had Windows 98SE it worked fine, but I did not install all the chipset drivers, or any drivers that are needed for the Intel CA810E board. I have read conflicting information on this post as to wheather XP will work. I don't know what HAL is. Both boards have Intel chipsets, i810 and 810E. I would appreciate more advice. Thanks Foz

I have an old HP Pavilion computer I bought used, for a learning toy. It now has a Cognac motherboard with a Celeron 600MHZ processor, Question, If I replace the motherboard with an Intel 810E and Pentium III processor will I have to re-install Windows XP Professional? I do not have the XP CD, but I do have the key number of the operating system that is installed on the computer, thanks to Belarc Advisor. 2nd Question, If I tried this and it would not work, could I re-install the original Cognac motherboard and be back in operation.
