98MP10 = WMP10 XP + XP SP3 Killer Replacements

Recommended Posts

Hi MDGx,

big mess with the uninstall of 98MP10.EXE!

It has deleted me a few files instead of restoring them (I had choosen 'Restore WMP9' and NOT 'Delete WMP9' in the control panel).

I had to reinstall manually a few things in order to make Windows works (for instance BROWSELC.DLL, CABINET.DLL, MSHTML.TLB). :}

Pls PM me if you translate those 2 files, and I'll re-package them with the translated texts + the rest, so we can have a French 98MP10. :thumbup
I have PM'ed you a few french packages as said.

Enjoy.

I have fixed [hopefully ;)] the uninstall bug, 98MP10 should not delete system files anymore without being able to rename from backups [Win9x limitation I presume, some system files are locked/in use and cannot be renamed/moved/deleted :(]. Please test 98MP10 again at your convenience:

http://www.mdgx.com/98mp10/98MP10.EXE

I am going to compile an Iexpress exe installer for the French 98MP10 soon.

I have sent u a PM with a request if u could pls translate those 2 text files into French. Tx in advance.

1 of those texts is the ReadMe for 98MP10.

Best,

MDGx

98MP10 is made by me, and I added the last version of ADVPACK.DLL [6.00.2800.1106 from XP SP1] that I know is compatible 100% with 98/ME OSes.

VC_R_xx updates are made by Advanced User [MSFN member]. I only provided links to them.

You may want to ask him about the newer ADVPACK.DLL, maybe he has experience using it.

Okay, okay I understand now. I'm just confused about which version to use because I

install 98MP10 last, and it overrides the newer version from 98 SE SP3 Beta 4.

I noticed that MD's IE6 SP1 Component Update pack installs ADVPACK.DLL 6.0.2900.2180 from XP SP2.

I used to back-date to 6.00.2800.1106 from XP SP1, but in the end just left the XP SP2 version.

It's been on my PC for some time now and seems to work okay...

My 2 ¢...

From what I recall, ADVPACK.DLL from XP SP1 is the last 6.0 SP1 build, because XP SP1 still supported (and installed) Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1. Therefore that advpack API was (still) built for 6.0 SP1.

All advpack 6.0.2900.xxxx builds are newer, but meant only for IE 6.0 SP2, which is installed only by XP SP2 and by XP SP3 [and also 2003 Server SP1 + SP2, and XP SP2 64-bit (64-bit code)]. 6.0 SP2 code is specific only to XP/2003 OSes, therefore newer advpack API is specific to IE 6.0 SP2 only.

In conclusion, I don't see the advantage of using any advpack.dll newer than 6.0 SP1 with 98/98SE/ME OSes, which do not support IE 6.0 SP2.

To my knowledge newest 6.0 SP1 advpack.dll build is 6.0.2800.1106 (installed by IE 6.0 SP1 + XP SP1).

If anyone knows of a newer 6.0.2800.xxxx ADVPACK.DLL build, please post here the link, and I'll add it to 98MP10.

Edit:

XP SP3 installs IE 6.0 SP3.

P.S.:

I'm on a "loaner" laptop at the moment, my PC is broken. So I can't be too active in the forums right now. I'll be back "full time" when I fix my PC [new mobo is on the way].

Best,

MDGx

I thought of a good reason why I (we) should install newer ADVPACK.DLL 2.0.2900.xxxx (I bet any build will work with all 98/98 SE/ME OSes, *if* IE 6.0 SP1 is already installed): all my INF installers [compiled with MS Iexpress] are (and should be) compatible with XP, 2003, Vista, 2008 + 7. ;)

Example...

I've compiled an EXE which installs File Manager (FM) 32-bit from NT4 [+ 2 essential add-ons + customizations] on 2000/XP/2003/Vista/2008/7:

http://www.mdgx.com/xptoy.htm#FMNT

If any1 wishes and got some free time, please test it out, and let me know if/how it works, or if any1 likes the idea of using FM in XP/Vista/7.

Will these files work without installing 98MP10? I do have it installed on one computer but not my other.

I have MPC installed with WMP 6.4 codecs. These are newer of course.

STRMDLL.DLL 4.1.0.3938

WMADMOD.DLL 10.0.0.4332

WMPNS.DLL 9.0.0.4504

WMSDMOD.DLL 10.0.0.4332

WMVDMOD.DLL 10.0.0.4332

They should work, but you must register them properly by running all these commands [from the Run... menu or a DOS box]:
C:\WINDOWS\INF\UNREGMP2.EXE /RegUniv
C:\WINDOWS\INF\UNREGMP2.EXE /UpdateWMP
REGSVR32.EXE /S C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WMV8DS32.AX
REGSVR32.EXE /S C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WMVDS32.AX
REGSVR32.EXE /S C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WMADMOD.DLL
REGSVR32.EXE /S C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WMSDMOD.DLL
REGSVR32.EXE /S C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WMVDMOD.DLL

Change drive letter +/- directory names if different on your computer, or use system variables from a DOS box [eventually paste all lines into a batch file]:

%windir%\INF\UNREGMP2.EXE /RegUniv
%windir%\INF\UNREGMP2.EXE /UpdateWMP
REGSVR32.EXE /S %windir%\SYSTEM\WMV8DS32.AX
REGSVR32.EXE /S %windir%\SYSTEM\WMVDS32.AX
REGSVR32.EXE /S %windir%\SYSTEM\WMADMOD.DLL
REGSVR32.EXE /S %windir%\SYSTEM\WMSDMOD.DLL
REGSVR32.EXE /S %windir%\SYSTEM\WMVDMOD.DLL

98MP10 does the same during install [see the INF file if you want details: 98MP10.INF].

?

You're probably asking why I posted those commands twice...

1. C:\WINDOWS [or your custom path if different] must be typed as actual path name in the Run... box [start menu].

The Run... box does not support environment variables. ;-(

2. You can type environment variables [like %windir%] in a DOS box.

DOX boxes/sessions/windows support environment variables.

Or even easier...

create a DOS batch file with those lines [the ones from the DOS box] to do this every time you install/upgrade WMP/MPC/similar:

@echo off
%windir%\INF\UNREGMP2.EXE /RegUniv
%windir%\INF\UNREGMP2.EXE /UpdateWMP
REGSVR32.EXE /S %windir%\SYSTEM\WMV8DS32.AX
REGSVR32.EXE /S %windir%\SYSTEM\WMVDS32.AX
REGSVR32.EXE /S %windir%\SYSTEM\WMADMOD.DLL
REGSVR32.EXE /S %windir%\SYSTEM\WMSDMOD.DLL
REGSVR32.EXE /S %windir%\SYSTEM\WMVDMOD.DLL
cls
exit

I guess it's time to go back to the drawing board... :(

For that, I have to install 98SE in a virtual machine.

See next post 4 the fix...
