When an application gets installed that associate their file type by detecting file extension.

U r problem, not a virus or spyware.

Ur most of file not assoicated with default application.

Install application for Ur appropiate files.

You don't have the appropriate application for that kind of file

(I.E. for .RAR files you need winrar or winzip or similar, for .XLS you need ms Excel)

It depends on the file you are trying to open.

Each file type needs a different application.

Looks like your file association database is hosed.

Tricky to repair. If system restore is enabled, use it. Otherwise a repair install.
