Hello?

I used to have multiple modems of

the same brand in one system.

Right now, I just have a single modem.

Browsing through the hardware device

manager, I notice the modem is listed as

"xxx #3".

Here, how can I get rid of the string "#3"

at the end?

Also, the modem uses COM5. How can I

reassign a different COM port that is currently

in use?

Basically, I would like to find out which

devices use which COM ports and want

to switch/reassign COM ports around

amongst devices.

Thanks.

Never had the urge to do that before, but you can probably search for that string in the registry and change it or maybe go through some trials such as: shutdown, unplug the device, boot, shutdown, plug the device in, and boot back up.

Older cards would let you change a jumper for that. These days you usually set it in the BIOS if you need to do so. But most people let the OS handle it. If you need to change it in the BIOS, you may have to change a master setting such as "Resource assignment: Auto" to manual before the options you want will appear.

In Device Manager, change your view by clicking on "View" where you normally find File, Edit, etc.

Why are you doing this stuff? I get the impression that these are cosmetic changes. Don't forget: If it ain't broke, don't fix it! :)
