hebman Posted November 28, 2006 Posted November 28, 2006 OK, so I'm trying to come up with a one-size-fits-all name. It should identify whether the device is a PC or Laptop, it should detail the site it's at, whether it's productio or DEV and have a unique id.I've come up with site-function-unique ID so <XXXX>-<w/L><P/D>-<nnnn> eg HOME-WP-1234 tells me that it's a workstation (W) in Production (P) at site 'home' with ID 1234Anyone got any comments on this standdard - I'd be keen to see what other people are using. This is primaritly for workstations, but a server adoption is possible (S for Server)
cluberti Posted November 29, 2006 Posted November 29, 2006 Does your site structure span offices, towns, states, countries? If you only have a smaller environment, that will work just fine. However, if you've got a multinational organization, something like <country code><state/province/city><laptop/desktop><designation>. For example, an XP desktop in NYC in the US in marketing would have a name like:USNY1LMARK01Just my few quid.
net_user Posted November 29, 2006 Posted November 29, 2006 i've done it different ways....servicetag for the pc as the pc name...orthe persons name as the pc name..what ever works for you...go with it...
chilifrei64 Posted November 29, 2006 Posted November 29, 2006 yeah alot of it depends on what is more specific for your company. My company spans multiple sites so I just go location - department - typeNumberso det-sales-wk01
