can't open folders

everytime i try to open any folder-my computer, my document, control panel, etc. - windows explorer encounters a problem and needs to close. then the computer hangs. i've checked harddrive, spyware, and virus. nothing. any help?

Try to repair your windows installation. Do you see anything in the event log?

Corrupted explorer.exe? Try what N1K suggested, I'm pretty sure you'll sort it out. Good luck!

where is the log?

Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer. You should find Control Panel in your Start menu (may have to tweak the options which you can do by right-clicking the taskbar and choosing Properties).
