memory cache

How does the memory cache work in vista and can it be configured? The reason I am asking is this. I was looking on the performance tab of the task manager. For the physical memory it says: Total 2045, Cached 1199, Free 40. Is it bad to only have 40MB free?

no.. that means that vista is utilizing a lot of memory.. same thing happens here:

when i start it up i have a gig of free memory.. it starts reading from the hard drive and in a matter of several minutes it takes all the space and the hard drive becomes quiet... that's superfetch.. it caches most of the s*** that u'll probably need later (which makes application start up times a lot shorter..).. vista itself needs around 550mb.. instead of leaving the other memory free, it takes advantage of all the available resources to improve performance.. just like in games - u cant make a strong army if u're not utilizing all your resources (gold, wood, etc.)

the Cache is called SuperFetch and this is a windowsservice. You can disable it through services.msc, but this will decrease the performance
