How can I monitor and log what programs was running?

Well for starters, there's msconfig to tell you which programs are loading in the background, for which the processes will display in Task Manager.

Then there's services.msc to show you the nitty-gritty of what XP is made up of. Be careful with those if you decide to change the settings.
