when downloading from IE 6... it opens desktop folder

i am not sure if this is the right place to post this problem... if not mods please move it

i encountered this strange problem. i am not sure how did it start but, when ever i try to download anything from any website in ie 6. instead of opening file save dialog... it just opens desktop folder and thats it.

i tried reinstalling ie 6 from ie.inf method, i scaned of viruses, trojans and etc.. my system is clean. i tried IEFix utility. nothing helps. can someone help in this.. i really dont want to reinstall xp ... any help would be helpful
