kgerlach Posted July 13, 2006 Posted July 13, 2006 Hello all:I was trying to update my drivers using a microsoft recommended site called drive headquarters, after running the update program it told me my sound, video drivers needed to be updated. I selected and away I went, it was a driver from Realtek, but when it started to update it said that the software wasn't signed by Microsoft, I said continue and then it went directly to blue screen saying windows shut down. the file on the blue screen is portcls.sys. I have not been able to find the old drive in my system, what can I do to reinstall the old drive or get this one to work. I currently have no sound on my computer.ThanksKent
allen2 Posted July 14, 2006 Posted July 14, 2006 You should have had a sound driver CD with your computer when you bought it. If you didn't, go to the website of your sound card manufacturer (if it's standalone) or to the website of your motherboard manufacturer. There you should find the lastest working drivers.
pmshah Posted July 15, 2006 Posted July 15, 2006 Since you tried to install an unsigned driver xp would have created a restore point automatically. Boot to safe mode, select the restore option & you should be back in business. As a rule don't update drivers unless you are having problems with it. The unix motto "don't fix unless broken" holds true for windows also.
kgerlach Posted July 16, 2006 Author Posted July 16, 2006 Thanks to your replies it worked and I have sound again!!!! I will also follow pmshah's advice "if it isn't broke don't fix it" Thanks again appreciate it.Kent
JuMz Posted July 17, 2006 Posted July 17, 2006 I think BTS has a lot of experience with this issue. I believe he encountered this error with his Driver Packs. You may want to talk to him.
