Laptop goofed.. WinXP 'Corrupted Data Structures' when booting

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone!

I have a topic I haven't seen discussed in this terms.

My laptop overheated (I think it overheated and shut off, anyway) when I tried to use Norton. So I went into safe mode since they recommended running it there and then in regular mode in case something else was preventing it from running (we thought/think maybe we have a virus).

The laptop shut down in the restore process and then had the corrupt SYSTEM file error. I ran the recovery center off our dell desktop CD (the acer laptop only has a format/reinstall - not a recovery disk) and got that fixed, then we had the missing Hal.dll and I wound up rebuilding the boot.ini file.

Now when I boot it goes into setup and has the "Internal Setup Data Structures Are Corrupted"... error. I just want to boot - not reinstall Windows.

Any ideas on how I can get into Windows without reinstalling? And if I have to reinstall any way to get around that?

Thanks everyone!

Josh

Never use Norton. It's noted for heavy resource consumption and inefficiency.

Also, clean out the fans if you're experiencing thermally related problems.
