Weird Word document problem

Hello all! I have Microsoft Office 97 installed on my computer. I have used WORD often and never had a problem-until now. Every time I bring up a NEW DOCUMENT PAGE, small backward slashes automatically begin to fill the page\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

where no words are typed and the document keeps moving downward. What have I unwittingly done? Please help!!

If it only happens in word, maybe a possible macro virus? If it happens in other apps maybe a stuck key?
