Wijono
In my PC running WinXP Professional, USB thumb-drive or memory stick that was plugged in was automatically recognized by the system. I don't know what happened, since recently when I plug in a new type of thumb-drive, Windows comes up with a pop-up telling that new USB drive is found and Windows wants to install the needed driver, I need then to click OK to proceed.Could someone brief me what could have gone wrong, and what can I do to fix that problem? Thanks a lot.
TheFlash428
This problem has been bugging the heck out of me lately too...does anyone know if this has to do with certain windows updates? I manage a lot of computers on a corporate domain, and a few months ago all of a sudden I'm having to visit people's computers every day to enter administrator passwords to install thumb drives, usb mice, keyboards, etc..., when this type of hardware used to install automatically. pmshah
My experience tells me that it depends a lot on the manufacturer of the thumb drive & the chip used. Generally the first time you connect any particular thumb drive you will get this dialog box. Once it has been identified & added to its database it will simply mount it the next time it is connected. But afterall you know the beast you are dealing with. It can change behaviour on a daily basis.
TheFlash428
I understand that, but...many of the devices that used to install automatically, like USB mice, keyboards, and many of the USB flash drives--but now they do not, they wait for user intervention. This wouldn't be a big deal, but some of our PC's only have USB for input devices (no PS2 ports), and what happens is when we build a PC from an image, we find ourselves unable to log into the computer because the mouse and keyboard do not work (unless the exact same model mouse/keyboard are used and plugged into the exact same USB ports they were on during the image creation). Previously, on the exact same model computers, after an image would be installed we may have to wait a few minutes, but this hardware would install automatically, thus allowing us to then log into the computer, which is why I thought it may have been some kind of update that broke the automatic hardware installation(?). I have even tried turning on "auto-login", but even this does not help because there are no available input devices to click "next" on the "add hardware" wizard that keeps popping up to install the input devices.Anyway, if anyone has input on this, it would be appreciated--I have not been able to find anything. pmshah
Looks like one of the security/privacy patches has done you in. It must have changed the way USB devices are recognised & installed. It might help to read the notes on all the patches you have incorporated & remove ones related to usb devices. Altough I don't particularly care for usb only support mobos. They are the biggest culprits in security lapses & data theft in corporate environment. I would prefer the old style USB header type mobos ( without these headers) where an employee has no way of stealing data.

Mordac85
In some instances I've been able to remote into the box w/RDP or Dameware and finish the install. Thankfully, we haven't been hit by that 'patch' yet, but I'd also like to know what the cause is before it does pop up.If you're in a corporate environment, do you use nLite to customize your installs?
