General Questions On Hard Drive

Recommended Posts

Have not replaced a Hard drive before, just want to know, does most Desktop PC [ Sony VAIO], usually accomadate 2 drives in general.? I am putting in a 100 GB as the Master and a 400 GB as a Slave.

Yep, my first time to get my hands "dirty: and I am doing a Master and Slave Combo. My primary concern is about the Cooling, Power supply and XP able to "see" the 400 GB Drive. Thanks in advance

XP will only see 137Gb of 400gb so you will have to partition it, partition it by using XP Disk Management or another program.

Hope this helps

The cooling should be fine....

* Do you have good airflow?

* How many fans do you have?

The PSU will be fine.

I just put a 200 HD on a 250 watt PSU, i'm sure your sony vaio has like 350 watt to a 500 watt, so dont worry about the PSU

If you have a Windows XP computer with SP2 then mostly likely you will be fine, install the drive and its ok. Now if you have a Windows XP with SP1 then mostly likely you will have to enable the 48-bit Logical Block. To do that go here. After that if it still don't work make sure that your BIOS is a 48-bit Logical BIOS. If it isn't, then go with what computerMan suggested. From personal experince, I have a Windows XP SP2 and installed a 200gb WD Sata HDD and I haven't had a problem with XP seeing it. :thumbup

Thanks for the helpful Links, Not sure whether I need to Configure my Drives, since I will be doing a Fresh Install of Windows XP Pro on the Master Drive. I am sure with the "high-end" Sony VAIO, the PSU, will be fine and with XP SP2, it will recognize the 400 GB drive. Have 2 Cooling Fans on the Sony VAIO, I think, have NOT taken a close look , the last time I installed my Video Card and Memory.

Easiest way of doing this:

1) Install the 100GB drive. Install XP SP2 (slipstreamed) and install drivers as necessary.

2) Shutdown the computer and install the 400GB drive.

3) When you're in Windows, just go to Disk Management and select the partitions that you want. You'll be able to make one 400GB partition if you'd like without any problems.
