Where is my defrag tool?

I dont seem to have disk defrag installed under accesories >tools.

And I cant find it on the WinXP cd.

Where is it and how do I load it?

Try this in Start > Run:

%SystemRoot%\System32\dfrg.msc

If that works, then you'll need to re-add the Shortcut to your Tools Folder.

Windows says it cant find file.

Is it on the XP disk?

yes its on the XP CD, you will have to run system file checker from the command prompt to restore any missing files.

Start > Run > cmd

sfc /scannow

Insert XP CD.

Edit: I've put together all the required executables and dll libraries from the XP CD, all you have to do is extract the zip and right click the inf file and select "Install". You can get the file from here (Note: This is from the Professional edition)

I did exactly what you said.

It checked my XP CD and went back to the the command screen.

I went to accesories and still now defrag tool.

Any more ideas.

As long as I am on the subject why the heck cant I just install it from the optional components of the setup from the WinXP cd.

Disk Defragmenter is installed, you'll only need to re-create the missing shortcut in Accessories > Tools.

Using

%SystemRoot%\System32\dfrg.msc

as a shortcut.

It's not in Optional components because its a core component of Windows and isn't meant to be removed at all.

what happens if you do right click on one of the hard disks in windows explorer, and do properties-->tools, do you have defrag in there?

there should be 3 tools, scandisk, defrag and backup....

I did the right click on the C drive in properties I clicked on the defrag button.

I then got an error screen that said the disk defrag is not installed,and to go to the add remove programs in control panel.

I am thinking XP doesnt know what the heck it is doing.

If it is a core program then it shouldnt suggest to go to the add/remove section.

Would my only option be to reinstall the XP program?

What really gets me is why the heck it would install in the beginning.

Also I only get "check now" and "defrag" tabs in tools.

No.

I only have the Home Edition.

On your XP Home CD, copy the following files:

DFRG.IN_

DFRG.MS_

DFRGFAT.EX_

DFRGNTFS.EX_

DFRGRES.DL_

DFRGSNAP.DL_

DFRGUI.DL_

to C:\Defrag\ (make this directory)

Open up command prompt (start > run > cmd)

Type the following:

expand c:\defrag\DFRG.IN_ c:\defrag\DFRG.INF

do the same process for the rest of the files

MS_ = MSC

EX_ = EXE

DL_ = DLL

All the files should now be extracted in c:\defrag\ Right click the inf file and select install. Recreate shortcut if it hasn't appeared.

Thanks for hanging in there with me AaronXP.

I got the files and expanded them like you said.

I installed from the inf file.

And then there was an icon in the start>accesories>tools this time (disk defragment)

It was not the normal defrag icon.It was a general dos icon .

When I clicked on it it tried to search for the dfrg.msc file and didnt find it.

I then thought to copy the file to windows>system32 directory.

This time it gave me an error screen, called Microsoft Managment Console and information like

"snap-in failed to initialize"

"name:unknown"

"CLSIDE: and a whole string of numbers....."

SOOO, I am stuck again.

One strange think is last week I installed my copy of XP on an older 350mhz machine for my wife because she got a virus and her W98 was locking up allot.

XP installed fine but I know its not registered and I am going to get here a new machine anyway.

But IT had defrag in the tools section and it worked great.

I am the administrator on my machine.

If there is no way to fix this problem.

Then can I just reinstall XP,without redoing my account settings.

It seems with W98 I was ableto just reinstall over an existing installation.

well, 3 things you can do about it:

1. clean windows install,

2. third party defrag tool (i would reccomend Diskeeper),

3. or may be Aaron will figure something out for your problem

i personally would reinstall windows, but if you dont want all this hasle, just get a third party defrag tool
