Feelin Posted April 22, 2006 Posted April 22, 2006 Hi!I needed to format my cpu and now face a stressing problem! As I shared this cpu, of which I'm administrator, with other users, I blocked all users access to certain HDisks. This way, when logging in, only my account had access to all HDisks and others, although viewing the HDisks could not access or even view it's contents. I've done this using the security policies for user accounts in the HDisk properties. Is was set up right and done exactly what I wanted!Thing is, after formatting the cpu even I can't have access to the disks! I'm an administrator, I have the same administrator name and password as before but can't get into the HDisks! Is there any way to regain access and control over the disks now? Please help and thanks for your time!Nuno
nmX.Memnoch Posted April 22, 2006 Posted April 22, 2006 Thing is, after formatting the cpu even I can't have access to the disks! I'm an administrator, I have the same administrator name and password as before but can't get into the HDisks! This doesn't matter because Windows doesn't use the actual name...it uses the Security Identifier, or SID.What you need to do is Take Ownership of those drivers. Right click the drive and choose Properties. Now go to the Security tab. At the bottom click on the Advanced button. Go to the Owner tab. Choose your account (or Administrators) under the Change Owner To section. Now check the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects option, then click Apply. It may return a few errors but if you run it a few times it should come back. Now you should be able to edit the security permissions as necessary.
Feelin Posted April 22, 2006 Author Posted April 22, 2006 There is no Security tab available... only General, Tools and Hardware! On the HDisks I do have access, the only tab besides these is Sharing. That's where I setup everything before, but know I can't even get there!
SecretNinja Posted April 22, 2006 Posted April 22, 2006 You need to turn of simple file and printer sharing. if you open an explorer window go to tools then folder options and finally view, scroll down the bottom and you should see that its says something like “use simple file sharing (recommended)” remove the tick and hit apply. You should now have access to the security tab.
Feelin Posted April 22, 2006 Author Posted April 22, 2006 That was it!And from that point on follow as http://pcsupport.about.com/od/pcrepair/a/reclaimfolder.htm and you'll get your stuff back!Thx every1!
