ntBackup? System State ? wtf?

Recommended Posts

With NT backup i am wanting to backup the following. I think System State does what i want but i am not sure.

I would like to backup GPO's, and AD permissions including users/passwords.

I would like to backup some data folders. (easy part).

Basicly if something goes wrong i plan to restore my server, recover the data folers that i need, and restore the system state.

Will this get all my user/passwords, gpo's, and AD settings back up in tact?

SystemState backups will not give you what you are looking for. While Group Policy settings are backed up with a SystemState backup, you would need to use the Group Policy Management Console to do a backup/restore. Or you could use Recovery Manager for Active Directory from Quest Software. (I recommend this product!)

As for users/passwords they are not backed up with a SystemState backup. Again, you would need to use Recovery Manager.. to recover an individual account.

Check out the tool at http://www.quest.com

Good luck.

I stand corrected. I read/interpreted the post the wrong way. If you are backing up the SystemState on a DC then the AD database, with usernames and passwords is included.

My bad :(
