EAT MY DUST
Try opening "system.ini" in C:\Windows and add these, maybe in safe mode,under:[386Enh]ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1DMABufferSize=64MinSPs=8under:[vcache]MaxFileCache=524288Then rebootThe bottom line is the critical 1 Edited April 12, 2006 by EAT MY DUST
Andromeda43
Of course I could be wrong, but.....I was always under the impression that Windows 98 didn't have enough addressing bits to address 1 gig of ram. With that much ram, that system might be a good candidate for an upgrade to a newer OS.Just a thought. Thanks EMD for the tips. I've been using the ConservativeSwapfile thingy for years, but not the rest of it.Andromeda43PS:EMD, is that a '57 Chevy convertable in your Avatar? That was my very first car....back in 1965. noguru
I case the 1gig ram is the problem also add to sytem.ini (368enh section). MaxPhysPage=40000This will prevent Windows from using more than 999 Mb ram.
kpuchatek
I'm really sorry, but I don't know why I mentioned msconfig.exe :-(Maybe blind ;-)In fact I have problem with System Utility Tool ->msinfo32.exe.When I go to Hardware Resources or Components and try to see ex. IRQs,I get "msinfo32 caused page fault in EYEDOG.OCX". It happens always, so it is not random. I searched Internet about this, and it seems problem is known, but could not find solution. There are some articles suggesting reinstalling WordPad or IE, but this not help. I don't think it is memory>512KB issue, anyway I have SP2.1a installed which claims to solve 512KB bug :-)Any ideas ? What is the last version of msinfo32.exe and EYEDOG.OCX ?Is there any newer than from WIN98SE original CD ?
eidenk
MaxFileCache=524288 is compulsory over 512 MB of RAM otherwise DOS will break.More exactly it is compulsory over 512MB of RAM to have a MaxFileCache value, and this value to be inferior or equal to 524288. kpuchatek
I looked at the problem a bit deeper. It seems it has something with riched20.dll library. I guess chain is: msinfo32 is using eyedog.ocx that calls functions from riched20.dll file. I found that riched20.dll on my PC is dated 2004 so much newer than win98se system files. But still no idea what is the source of problem. I will try to extract riched20.dll from Win98 CD, but any suggestions are welcome.

kpuchatek
I restored riched20.dll from original WIN98SE CD, but no lack :-(, same error happens. Will still play with some new riched20.dll version, but now I think problem is somewhere else. Any ideas are welcome, I could not find anywhere solution to this issue.
Andromeda43
In the past, I've fixed a g'zillion problems with 98/SE by just running setup.exe /is /iefrom the original 98/SE OEM CD.All you have to do to make that work is rename win.com to win.oldand then boot up with your Windows 98/Se CD and run the install.Have your 25 digit Key available.OR...you can boot up with a 98 or ME bood floppy and run Setup.exe from there with the appropriate path in the command line.OR...If you like, you can also run it right from your HD.Make a folder for it under C:\ and copy everything from the CD's \win98\folder to the folder on the HD and run Setup.exe from there. That's preferrable if you don't have a boot disk with CD drivers on it.If you need a very good boot floppy, download a copy of my own customizedWindows ME boot floppy (wnMEboot.exe) from my personal Download site.Run this .exe file and it will prompt you to insert a blank 3.5" floppy disk. Then it will burn the image of my own ME boot disk to that floppy. This is a great Service Tool for anyone still working with 98, 98/SE or win-ME.Look around,,,,,there's some other great programs on that site too.Beers all around!
