letter j instead of £ sign ?

i have win xp pro sp2, lately instead of getting a pound sign on certian web pages ebay etc

im getting a letter j instead, i have checked language options keyboard etc there all set to the £ sign so what going on.im in the uk as well it only recently started to happen.whats the cure besides a format and reinstall

I don't know a direct solution to your problem, but in the mean time (perhaps you know already I don't know) you can use left alt + numpad 156 or left alt + numpad 0163 to get a £

I've also found that typing "& # 8 3 5 6 ;" will give you ₤. Just remove the quotes and spaces.
