How do I tell which version of windows XP Pro my product key is for (VLK , OEM , RETAIL) ?

I got a brand new IBM T40 with an original product key on a sticker on the laptop which I belive was for OEM but when I enter it, windows setup tell me my product key is invalid.

If it came on a sticker on your machine it's an OEM key.

For OEM keys you have to use the OS CD provided by your manufacturer. It wont work with other types of windows xp.

How do I tell which version of windows XP Pro my product key is for (VLK , OEM , RETAIL) ?

If its on a case sticker its OEM, If is on a CD case it Retail, and if its on a sheet of paper From MS Licencing its VLK.
