I recently builded a new computer with an Opteron 170 Dual Core processor. I installed Win XP Pro (32bit version) and notice that the computer behave somewhat differently. Some how i cant use the ping function due to Data Execution Prevention (DEP), and yes i tried to turn DEP off but it doesnt have an option that will allows me to turn it off. Anyway i just want to find out if running win xp 32bit version will perform any different on a 64bit processor? Also could it be that i'm running a server CPU that it is acting different? Thanks.

The 32-bit operating system will work fine on a 64-bit processor, it just won't take advantage of 64-bit mode.

DEP can be disabled in BIOS setup, as M$ link above shows.

Additionally, you can kill DEP at boot time by adding /noexecute=AlwaysOff to your boot.ini. Per the KB:

"This setting does not provide any DEP coverage for any part of the system, regardless of hardware DEP support. The processor does not run in PAE mode unless the /PAE option is present in the Boot.ini file."

Note that the boot.ini option only works on 32bit - it will do nothing on x64 Windows.
