hello

i have a problem that i've been trying to find a solution for it for about a week now

my prob. is :

i have a program that i made it with microsoft Access and i want the users on my network to use it and edit the data inside it, i've shared the file and protect it against deletion using the security options in windows xp but the main problem is that i can't protect the program from being copied over the network while i'm allowing the users to use it to enter and edit data.

what is the solution????

thanks

yes this is what i mean eyeball

i don't want them to copy the program file from the main PC while in the same time they can edit th data by using the program.

my setup is :

5 PCs connected through network switch

PC1: main PC which has the program : WINDOWS XP PRO SP2 & WINDOWS 2003 Server

PC2: Windows xp pro

PC3: Windows Millennium

PC4: Windows 98

PC:5 Windows Millennium

is that what u mean by my setup ??

thanks

Move the original file out of the share. (another location)

Then from there create a shortcut and place that in the share.

Done.

PS: Make sure that add the user privileges in the original file location (directory).

i've tried this way before but it didn't work with me

for example:

the file path is D:\WORK\attendance.mdb

the shared folder is D:\ATT

if i made a shortcut for the file the path will b d:\WORK\attendance.mdb

this is not right path for the other PCs

and if i tried to access the shortcut //admin/d/att/attendance.ink

it will not work because the network can't access the unshared folder which contains the file in the shortcut

:blushing:

i will try to do it now and change user privileges in the original file location

what if all the users had a shortcut on their desktop to this file? i presume that as long as they have read/write permissions they would be able to view it and save it, i dont have a server setup atm otherwise i would test this, if you do manage to do it please let us know

thanks :)

if they don't have access to view tha shared folder, this will b the simplest solution

but they can browse it through the file explorer.

i will try the permissions method and see if it's actually works

thanks for ur cooperation

i've tried to make your solution "The Glimmerman" on the network but it didn't work

even in the same pc, for example:

if i made a folder called "test"which contains the file named "new.mdb"

and another folder "test2" that contains the shortcut

and the computer name is "MAIN"

if i made a shortcut for the file and changed the target in the shortcut to :

//MAIN/test/new.mdb

the file will not work on the same pc if the folder is not shared, even with the right permissions.

this means that also the shortcut will not work on the network.

It will work i you are an admin and have access to the standard hidden shares. I think.

In your situation it will not work. Sorry

But I maybe have another solution.

I'm not an access specialist, but is it possible to secure the database.

Like a check if the file is at the right location. by vbscript.

Or by a macro.

Hope this will get you in the right correction.
