[TIP] Setting up a caching proxy server (like SQUID)

One of the best Proxy Servers to be used, is the SQUID Proxy. It has an excellent caching engine. If you install it on your own PC & connect to the net via squid, net access speed is much faster than otherwise (atleast, i have felt that). The installation is pretty simple (detailed below for 32-bit NT OS, may not work on 64-bit).

Procedure:-

1) Extract squid-2.5-stable.zip in c:\squid

2) Rename the files "mime.conf.default" & "squid.conf.default" to "mime.conf" & "squid.conf", in the folder c:\squid\etc

3) Go to command prompt & change 2 the folder c:\squid\sbin

4) run "squid -z" to create cache directories

5) run "squid -i" to install squid as a service

6) Now run the SquidNT service from the Services applet

7) U can now use squid with <IP> & Port: 3128
