Windows ME USB -> WIN98 SE

I have a huge collection of USB thumbdrives that all require different drivers to work on Windows 98 SE.

I have successfully installed NUSB and thats fine, but I was just wondering, is there any way of updating Windows 98SE so it behaves like Windows ME (ie. use its native drivers?)

I am currently trialling ME2SE but I would just like to be able to add ME's USB support without all the other updates to Windows 98SE?

Has or Does anyone know how to do this, or what files I would need to copy from ME to achieve this?

Thanks for keeping Windows 98SE alive!

You should (If you haven't) ask this of MDGx in his stickied thread/subforum. He has a pretty intimate knowledge of everything thats added in the ME2SE process, and could more effectively answer. From what I know he's also fairly active there to queries.

To add only USB + Firewire + WDM *.SYS driver support from ME to 98SE [in case NUSB doesn't work for you], please follow these steps:

- d/l + install Gape's SP 2.1a:

http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=61749

- d/l + install 98SE2ME [2.2 MB, English only]:

http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=46349

- Close the batch [98SE2ME.PIF which runs 98SE2ME.BAT from C:\9!M folder] without installing anything.

- Edit E0!X.BAT in Notepad.

- Search for all files that go into %windir%\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS and for the 2 files that go into %windir%\SYSTEM\IOSUBSYS [NTMAPHLP.PDR + USBMPHLP.PDR] .

- Add also the lines for [these files go into %windir%\SYSTEM]:

VIP.386

USBUI.DLL

HID.DLL

HIDCI.DLL

- Keep [cut + paste] all lines above into E0!X.BAT and delete all others [except @ECHO OFF (1st line) and EXIT (last line)].

Complete list of files installed by 98SE2ME:

http://www.mdgx.com/98-5.htm#FME

- Save your file.

- Run E0!X.BAT by itself from within the C:\9!M folder.

Make sure your WinME setup CD is inside your CD/DVD drive or have all WinME *.CAB files anywhere on your drives/partitions.

- Make sure u install WinME USER32.DLL + USER.EXE 4.90.3001 from C:\9!M into %windir%\SYSTEM or if u prefer, d/l + install Win98SE USER32.DLL + USER.EXE 4.10.2231 update [also installed by Gape's SP]:

http://ftp.isu.edu.tw/pub/CPatch/msupdate/.../291362usa8.exe

- Reboot.

- Done.

- If something doesn't work, d/l + install NUSB:

Hope this helps.
