Each time a file is opened from within Explorer by double-clicking, an entry is placed in the history cache:

History\Today\My Computer.

What is the registry key to prevent this please?.

Disposition of this key -

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID

You need to change DWORD Attributes from ShellFolder like this -

60 01 00 20

Special Folder History be deleted.

I changed the key attribute to the one you suggested. I rebooted the PC but the history is still being logged.

Try this (actually a Group Policy: at least it works on my own computer):

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

NoRecentDocsHistory

DWORD = 1

Note:

It will still log IE browser history.

You'll no longer have My Recent Documents listed.
