Network Basics

I need to get up to speed on the basics of networking. I am looking for some tutorials or something to help. Specifially I am trying to share files and internet with a PC and a MAC. The PC is mine and the MAC is my kid's. I have 2 10/100 network cards in my PC and the mac is setup also. Is it possible to use the network cards or will I have to buy a router? And am I even going to get them both to comunicate together? I am connected to the net via cable modem. Any help I thank you in advance.

There are ways to set up internet connection sharing, however it gets complicated, especially with someone without a lot of experience with networking. given the price of today's routers, it just makes sense to get one. It gives you a built in firewall, IP addressing to the computers so they can get on the web, and a host of other features depending on the router.

manually configuring a computer to act as a router takes a lot more work.

I couldn't find anything on mac/pc internet connection sharing, however manual IP addressing netted me these results:
